Hot Rods 29 Ford X-tra Cab Truck

I finally rolled it out into the sunlight for it's first actual viewing. It originally started as a Murray bodied touring sedan. I cut the rear doors out, and filled the rear wheel wells. It's chopped 6", channeled 4.5", and rolling on a 104" wheelbase. I still have to finish shortening the roof section above the doors. Flathead 8BA backed by a T5, followed by a Ford 9". 1940 backing plates with Buick drums for the front brakes. I'm running the 40 front spring on the rear, with a few leaves removed. I've gotten a set of Edmunds heads and two pot intake to be added when the paint and detailing comes into play. I still have to mount the Schreoder box and Ansen pedals, and figure the exact spots for the wishbone/trailing arm mounting points, then begin the interior.

This is my first Hot Rod build and appreciate any input of things to consider regarding the things left to do.

 

I like it, nice job on the proportions. I think its easy to screw up the extended cab truck. Also I think the full hood really ties everything together. Keep up the good work.

 

X 2 on the proportions and the hood. This build shows a lot of thought and planing. I like it. I would never guess it is your first build. My only suggestion is give it shiney paint! This car deserves to be finished right.

Thanks guys (Except that "Khaunaa" rahtard. Maybe learn how to spell Kahuna before you chose to use it in a public domain) . I appreciate it. I'd forgotten the paint details. I do plan on painting it. My plan is gloss black with the thin body line being silver leafed. Not decided whether verigated or burnished yet though. I thought it would give it a trim piece look that I don't think has been seen too many times.

 

Is that good or bad?

I started to say that those are usually called street rods but yours is definately not a street rod.

Good short wheelbase, ought drive like a go cart. Thats not a bad thing.

I'll tell you something that I would do before I did final detailing and paint, especially since it is your first rod. Get it road worthy and drive it around for awhile. Get the bugs worked out of it, make any changes that you have discovered would make it better or more correct then blow it apart for detail and paint.

What did you use to fill the wheel wells?

 

Looks wierd inthe little thumbnails but spot on when you blow up the pictures. I dig it.

 

Looks good! Like some have said, many miss the mark on proportions.

 

Scooter- I used 18 ga sheetmetal. Rolled and hammered to fit the vaious contours. I even managed to make each filler out of a single piece too. It was the rear portion, at the bottom, that gave me the biggest fit.

Yep! Had the same issue with mine. I ended up using a '52-ish chevy hood to get the conpound curves.

Hey, Sanchez, I like what you have started here. The one thing that I would suggest is to check on the roofline profile as you are completing the body.

There was someone else who was doing something like this w/ a 30-31 IIRC, and the sweep of the rooflike left an odd hump from having removed the rear door. You may have to cut a long, thin wedge section (wide at the front ) out of both sides above the quarter windows to match the roof sections above the front doors; just enough to get a nice flow from the front edge of the roof back to where it rounds off at the rear.

I'm diggin' your big back window Chevy, too. What year is that?

Thanks for the heads up on the roof. I'm thinking I will be doing the roof filler out in the driveway, so I can stand further back and address what your talking about. I hadn't tought of it until you'd mentioned it. BTW-It's a 55 Cameo.

Yep! That was me... What a PAIN IN THE ASS!!! I used a slant window body though. They're just a little different than his. My quarter windows had a much more obvious discontinuity than his and they were longer, making it worse. I also had this issue with the roof line and had to do a ton of work to get it to line up right...

It looks good and I can't wait to see it person. You build a pretty good hot rod for biker trash.

 

Im shooting for our July show. No paint obviously. But besides the financial portion, I think it's doable.

 

Anyone recommend a radiator shop in the Southern California area to build a custom radiator or a type radiator that would fit a model A shell width and modified from there?
