Projects My Spurgin/Giovanine inspired 1925 Chev roadster build thread

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Jimmy B, May 2, 2010.

  1. I thought I would start a thread of the entire build of my roadster to date instead of having a half dozen threads all over the shop.

My roadster is inspired by the Spurgin/Giovanine roadster which I first laid eyes on in the book "The Birth Of Hot Rodding, the Story of the Dry Lakes Era"
this roadster has had me captivated for the past 5 years.

I made to decision to can my '29 Chev project and start looking for a '25 or '26 Chev. In early March '06 I found out about an Auction that had a Chev advertised as a Teen Chev with 3-port. So I sold a '30 Chev body so I would have money for the Auction. My Dad and me drove 235 miles to the Auction and was able to buy the Teen Chev with 3-port which was actually a '26 for $175aus + $17.50 gst.

decided to use the '25-'26 chev chassis

Next I started the search for a roadster 1/4 panels and in April 2006 I bought a pair of coupe panels which I would turn into roadster 1/4s They never showed.

After being shafted out of OZ$436 for that pair of 1923 Chev coupe 1/4 panels I asked Tman if he could chase up the seller but he had no luck, but found out a few things about the seller. I felt cheated as I had no recourse thru ebay due to leaving it too long as shipping by sea takes 3 months.
A bit dejected Brandy offered help if I needed it, well one day while trawling ebay Bam! complete 1925 Chev roadster rear, seller wouldn't post so remembering Brandy's offer I emailed to ask if she knew anyone in Tennessee, well she did 'Earl Schieb'.

Earl Schieb (Mike) said he would pick them up if I won the bidding, I did and Mike drove 100 miles down to pick them up for me. Awesome!!! Mike is a champion and this project owes him and Brandy a lot.

When Mike returned from picking them up he sent me photos and to my surprise my $405us had bought 2 roadster backs, Karma.

Mike cut the '24 Chev rear up and stuck it in a box and posted it to me..... 7 days later they arrived in Oz, best $286 I spent.

Boxed the front frame rails. Built the recess for the bottom radiator outlet
Still have to holesaw 6 1-1/2" in 1/8 plate for that gap below the front x-member.

The front pipe will blend better with a little grinding. The tapered pipe is a 1927 chev torque tube it has a 5mm wall so a bit of grinding wont adversely affect it strength.
Firewall will be stitched back together to look stock. Oh and I am converting it to LHD.

  5. I made a dimple die so I can mount the Aluminium hood sides.

I had a few of these donuts left from hole sawing 3/8" plate 1" round.
I used a countersink bit to get the desired depth. I then found a countersunk brass screw and a 3/8 nut.

I tested it on a piece of scrap aluminium drilled a hole & tightened it up with a 3/8 ring spanner.

    Turned out ok:)

  10. gauges laid out where I want them. The VDO tach will be replaced when I find a SW tach I can afford. I have an AC oil temp gauge for the empty hole. I also need to find a SW Auburn style temp gauge.

Absolutely cool! I hate to criticize though...otO mOtO is right... the hood line is running uphill. Now would be the time to step back and take a deep breath and change it. It sucks to do, but I've been there before! (lots) Nice to see somebody working from scraps and making it cool!

That is such a cool build, I give you high marks for execution, sticking to it and really doing something special. Would love to hear that thing run, thats another star for getting that old chevy banger to even work
