Is there anyway to pass rego with a car with no outside door handles? Sending a chopped 50 Merc over, right hook, Jag clip, just painted and trim finished.....But No door handles.
Probably depends on the state it's going to be registered in. I know some states like you to have a clear and obvious way to get into the car (in case you're on fire and trapped inside etc...) Got any pics of the Merc? Can't hurt to have another one down here.
No pics. Its slightly chopped (2.5-3inch) straight post, skirts,WWW, painted gunmetal grey metalic with all black trim. SBC and 9 inch diff. Going to NSW. Jr. Southerland built it for his brother Rob. Will be shipped in 3 weeks. Top quality Merc!!
From one of my more learned friends... "The door access could be the least of their problems Being a '50 it will have to go through full registration with engineering inspections Unless it could be registered on club or special interest registration."
Yup, a fifty model is too recent to be registered as a Rod. It will very likely have to be registered as an ordinary normal road car of that era, and have to go through the normal registration process. Any significant modifications to the original car will need an engineers report. That is something many engineers will not do unless they were involved with the original build. For instance, an engineer will not certify welding has been done correctly, if the welds cannot be seen, because they may have been covered by body filler, paint, or filed smooth. The engineer has no clue about the soundness of those welds, so he will not sign his name to them. I believe external door handles are a safety requirement as stated previously. An engineer will spot that immediately.
Did the Holden Efijy concept car ever get registered for road use ? Built in 2005, no external door handles.
G'day Beet, long time no hear, trust all is well. I know of a number of 'legitimate' kustoms that don't have external door handles here in NSW, however, they all have some form of 'hidden' mechanical release function from the outside (ie buttons hidden in the stainless trim or in the sills or similar) with all having a traditional mechanical door release from the inside, with the view that in an accident the passengers need to be able to get out with no electrical assistance etc. Tell the owner of the car to PM me and I can forward info on the engineer we used for Grants merc, as we fitted a Jag Series 2 front end, triangulated 4 ling, and tidied up the ol girl with a few repairs etc, no drama's with full NSW rego. Cheers, Drewfus
Don't know, but just looking at it, ground clearance and headlight height might be an issue for road registration.
try a press buttons like the rear tailgate on a kombi van are useable - recessed to be flush with the door skin.
Visible mechanical device for opening the door from the out side.<o> </o> A small leaver coming up in the window rubber with a scull valve cover, so you push it forward and the door opens, some of them pull up to open, big car may need door poppers. <o></o>
As stated already, you need a means of mechanical external entry. Skulls not needed. And anything modified will have to be inspected and the certifying engineer will be putting his name to it so if the quality of the work is not obvious or is hidden under filler and paint, he's going to be wary. May need engineer shopping to find one willing. I know a guy here in QLD who brought in a Studebaker earlier this year with a late crate SBC, aftermarket MII front end, 9" rear etc and it was regoed OK after inspection. It was a very well built car and the workmanship was obvious. He only had to have seatbelts and RHD headlights fitted (they dip the other way). But, caution, different states do things differently and with modified cars, there is no guarantee. Do as Drewfus says, get your customer to speak to a NSW engineer now, not later.
