I recieved mine yesterday as well. It is beautiful as ever. I don't know what everyone is complaining about.
Good, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. You know, I was thinking the same thing the moment I peeled back the cover, because, I too enjoy reading the articles. Also, of all the '32 hot rods they included, they only included one Model-A coupe. Now, I know damn well, there are plenty of bitchen Model-A coupes out there that they could have included.
What do you expect for ONLY $12.00 per issue subscription price? That's 1/2 the price of many good hardcover books @ Amazon.com.
I kind dug it.Like the best of Playboy. When you get old,you can't remember the early issues anyway! Mail service is a funny thing. RJ doesn't drive around to your door. The subcontract it to the USPS. If it isn't priority mail (4.95) then it becomes subject to the whim of what other stuff is going on with the postal service, it can get shuffled to the back of the truck. I remember a librarian one time explaining how to break in a book.I always do it with a magazine. 1 Open it at the center. 2 go back 1/4 of the way and open it then go 1/2 the other way and open it again. Doesn't preload the binding. I've yet to have a RJ come apart on me. Your results may vary.
I haven't had any binding problems, and I don't care when it shows up, as long as it DOES show up. I understand how periodical rate shipping works and I'm OK with it. For me, it's all about the content, and since I already have every issue, I feel cheated when I get the same thing again, minus the tech info. I was done with it after 15 minutes. The only redeeming feature in #47 was the reference to the earlier issue, so you could look up more info on a particular car. Other than that, I thought it was pretty weak. I hope TRJ is listening.
The "double vision" is done on purpose. And actually a very good idea which you only see on the high end magazines. Most people don't want to open up a magazine all the way like you did in the photo. Its nearly impossible to create a binding using this system that hold up if you do. The "Double vision" as you call it is done so that if you don't open up the magazine to where it lays flat you will not loose so much material from the magazine center. In other words if its not done, you will end up with a shortened photo, short odd proportioned cars. Optimally the "double vision" needs to be a differed distance thru-out the magazine to make up for the amount of pages you flip. But usually one distance it chosen, so on some pages the "double vision" will show up slightly more.. and others you will not notice at all.
Rik, I understand the mechanics of it. I worked in the ad business for more than 20 years and saw thousands of pieces of artwork (both film and digital) out the door for print ads, including ads that ran across gutters. Believe me, I have done nothing abusive to this mag to affect the binding in a negative way. BTW, and this goes out to everyone else as well, I'm only pissed off because I love TRJ. If I didn't, I wouldn't care.
Just bought it at a swap meet, disapointing, not the quality, but what the tone of the editorial portends to. When a magazine starts getting self referential, its usually the first sign they are going to 'Jump the shark'. Please dont lose focus, TRJ.
I'm still awaiting mine to arrive so I can be disaapointed in it! *jokes* I'll pass judgement when it eventually arrives (hopefully this week).
Going to be calling TRJ tomorrow. My sub is good through issue #52, and #47 never showed up. I finally bought it at the newstand, vs. miss it and have to pay stupid backorder money or ebay money to track it down.
Mine arrived today. Very disappointing for a so-called anniversary edition. Not much effort ,or research, for this monumental? issue. Just my opinion.......Mike
I finaly got mine the other day. Ho hum... Some cool pics I have not seen before but... My real beef is that it was wrapped in a sash saying my sub runs out with the next issue. I should have two more after that! Gonna have to call them and hash it out.
Finally arrived. Happy enough with the quality. Its a good issue if you want to introduce non car or bling-bling car people to proper motor vehicle porn. However, given I have a full set of RJ's and re read them often its not really a great issue for me personally as its all old news.
Wohooo it arrived today!! I can see it is mailed from New Zealand, so maybe thats the reason for the late arrival? Just about to open it...
I must say the "double vision" proportions worked out perfectly for me as I hold it open reading it sitting on the porcelain throne in the guest library. Since I am missing a few back issues the recap the 15 years is fine with me. There is a good explanation in Steve Coonan's Editorial. But I think there is some fuzzy math here. 15yrs x 4 issues = 60 not 47. I know that there have been some irregularrities in the frequency of issues in the past, and maybe this one as well. Perhaps commemorating milestones by issue number such as #50 might have been more appropriate. With that said I am NEVER disappointed with TRJ. Can't wait for #48.
I thought #47 was unbelievable. It's cool to see all those great cars in one issue. It's a wonderful refresher on some cars I havn't looked at in years. I like how each article has an update on the car, builder and owner. It's another excellent piece by the Rodder's Journal!!
It's finally hit the shelves here in the Fresno area, if anyone still needs a copy Borders at Riverpark has a few left.
I've had mine for over two weeks now & since I've had time to read it I thought my perpective on the "rerun" might have changed...... but I've not even felt the need to pick it back up again. Looking forward to #48. JH
Mine came several weeks ago...but agree that it was disappointing, I look forward to the articles in particular, lots of good history usually, but this issue was mostly recycled pictures from past issues...hope the next one is better, or will reconsider my subscription.
I received two responses from Chastity(on here as TRJ) and Emmilene(I believe that was her name, sorry for forgetting!) representing Rodders Journal concerning my inquiries of my subscription and mailing whereabouts. I thought this was ultra-professional and am happy they both took the time to respond.Thank you! Good on you all,Rodders Journal! Oh,I received #47 yesterday,Monday. Not too shabby? I have all the cool cars in one edition now.
Hang on everybody. Some HAMBers are in the next issue too and I think it will be a good one. Got a sort of preview. It should be back to the good format and they are trying to get the binding issue taken care of. Regards to all-Mike
I hate bitching on-line.... but..... I agree. I try to keep the negative comments to myself, but maybe someone from TRJ will be reading this. I spend hours reading every issue. #47 didn't get even 15 minutes.
I believe there were a few HAMB members cars in issue #47. Mine for one. I enjoy every issue of Rodders Journal. Great people putting out an incredible product. Also, I have never really thought of it as a magazine, it's really more of a book, and each issue is prominently placed on my coffee table for all to enjoy after I have read it from cover to cover. chuck
