Didn't the Carroll Brothers run a fuel car? You might be thinking of Carroll Caudle doing that. '55 2 door hardtop Modified Production. He pulled a valve stem out of a tube. That is when he went tubelss. The first guy I remember doing that. Found another MPH when he did it. Those old Firestone 7" wrinkle-walls leaked like a sieve tubeless. My Jr stocker liked them tubeless also, tried that after Carroll found his was faster that way. They would go flat in about 8 to 12 hours. They found Carroll in a tree, one shoe missing and never did find his glasses. A customer loaned him a pair of shoes and bought Carroll and Gwenda plane tickets home. Jim Hayter got his car back home. Really tore it up. My wife and I drove down to Amarillo to help him move the drive train over to another car for a Div 4 points race two weeks later. Think he won that one.
Can't remember if Carrolls 55 has been posted or not. 70 pages is a lot to go back over, but anyway here's shot of Carroll Caudle's 55. pretty near impossible to beat back in the 60's in and around Amarillo. believe me we tried with our 55 but no luck. still don't believe anyone can shift a 4 speed like Carroll. This is a great thread. I could well have missed it but, does anyone recall the series on building an M/P in either Car Craft or Popular Hot Rodding?
Without looking through my back issues, I recall that Popular Hot Rodding's long-running "Project X" 1957 Chevy project car was eventually built for Modified Eliminator at one stage. Car Craft had Rick Voegelin's "30 day wonder" C/SM 1968 Camaro and "Clockwork Chevy" 1957 Chevy which was originally built for AHRA Formula racing (I forget which /HR class), then later updated to NHRA M/P specs. Hot Rod magazine's John Dianna's E/MP Duster was their featured M/P project car. Super Stock and Drag Illustrated had a C/MP AMC Hornet build-up as well as Arlen Fadely's Super Modified Maverick project car. That's all I can think of at the moment. Did I miss any? Ah, those were the daze (as a young lad) growing up reading those car mags starting in the fifth grade in the fall of 1969; I couldn't wait for next month's issues to arrive at the newstand! I was wondering if anyone remembers another C/MP 1955 Chevy that competed against Ralph Ridgeway at the 1967 Indy Nationals. It looks to have been sea mist green, and had red painted steel rims. and two small side by side hood scoops. This car is pictured in the backround on page 168 of the book Gasser Wars by Larry Davis. I have reason to believe this may be my car,and might be from the Phoenix AZ area.

Mick, Nice looking car, but most of the 302 Camaros that I remember ran in D or E/MP. A/MP was the stomping grounds for the 427 cars. Larry T

I Talked to him recently at his N.C. 'hidaway', He told me HE always owned the Car and Grump got the glory. As far as partnership with Carl Spiedel, He promised to 'kick-in' but never did. Car went through 7 ( that we know of) -Lettering Changes. S/S, M/P, then match altered wheel base race trim .We have recently obtained lost photos from Carl's son that have been hidden since the 60's. I'll dig some out and post.The car was eventually bought by Bill Smrtic and turned into a 'Storm King" Car ...I'll post that too. That fiberglass front end would've placed the car in one of the Gas classes, most likely E/G. Modified Production cars had to use factory sheet metal. The only time fiberglass was allowed was if the car came that way from the factory, e.g., 1969 440+6 Road Runners and Six Pack Superbees. Pete

It might fit in Formula 2 /HR in AHRA. I really don't know for sure, I'm not really up on old AHRA rules, even though they were a lot of tracks around here that ran AHRA back in the 60's. Larry T
Which has to make you wonder about Dick Landy's 69 Dart which, from what I have read and seen, was his 68 SS/B car with a 69 grille, tailights, etc. As picky as NHRA can be, makes you wonder how it could be classified as an A/MP with all of the 68 lightweight stuff (hood, windows, seats, etc.) When he ran it MP also had to have the back seat unless it came without one, ala the business coupes, or the 68 Cuda/Dart. Maybe he but a steel hood on it and stock 69 sets but I haven't found anything that points to that. Straighten me out if anyone wishes.

Interesting that even though it does'nt have a sheet metal front and bumpers ,All safety glass date coded drum brakes originally and when it race circa 70's in the ProStock class UK still on Leaf springs but inset.
