I remember that car. Lots of similarities to Carl's Willys. I'd like to see more pics of the Spit Fire car, if you have them. All of my pics of The Big Ed's car are gone so I'm always looking for them.

The alterds were always a regional thing. But to be sure, their popularity in So-Cal was almost unsurpassed. I recall sitting in the stands at Irwindale and hearing the announcer say.."fuel altered qualifying begins now" You could hear the crowd cheer and murmuring by the more asute spectators "Yea look at the track photographers fight for a good spot. Gonna see some good lane changes."

I always thought the Duster was the typical Pro Stock car of the '70's. It just looked right.

This is a picture of Pete Gates 1965 Comet Cyclone altered wheel base car. This is Dyno Don's old car at the time Pete was still getting help from Dyno Don hence Don's name on the side of the car. Pete is the guy in the the front of the car facing toward the camera.

Here are some more pictures of Pete Gates 1965 Comet Cyclone altered wheelbase car. The hood is black because nitro methane was spilled on it. These pictures were taken at Milan Dragway in 1966.

I ran across this shot of Dean Lowe's old RPU yesterday afternoon. The picture is from the April '65 issue of PHR.
