It was a gorgeous evening yesterday so I decided it would be the perfect opportunity to shine up the daily driver. I was just about finished drying the car off when I hear a rumble coming down the block. It was my uncle in his prized 63 Corvette. A 327 4-speed car. A car I'd seen under a cover my whole life -- bald rear tires telling many stories about it's past. He bought the car off a used car lot after returning from Vietnam and proceeded to do as any good car guy would do with a hot new ride . . . put the hammer down and enjoy it! It was involved in many stoplight to stoplight battles and got him to work when he owned a local service station in Minneapolis. The trusty 327 gave up the ghost in 1970 or 71 and the car was pushed into garage storage. For nearly 40 long years he wanted to get the car back on the road, but family, work, etc. seemed to always make other plans. A few years ago he began to refresh the car, but life once again got in the way. Over the course of the last month, one of his sons -- my cousin -- has spent countless hours in the garage thrashing away on the Vette. My uncle returned from a month long trip out of state yesterday evening to the Vette waiting for him in the driveway. Before he had even unpacked he jumped in for the maiden voyage. This is what I saw as he pulled up to the house. I can't tell you how happy I am for him. The smile on his face was absolutely priceless and my cousin said he "gave her hell" all the way to my place -- telling stories of the car's past the whole way.
Sweet!!!!!!! Good for the son. Something both of them will never forget. A great feeling all the way around.
It's got quite a few scratches, etc but it's a way cool survivor. He really wants to re-paint it, but I love the way it looks fresh out of a 40 year slumber in the garage.
I wouldn't worry too much about scratches. After 40 years I'd be driving and enjoying it as much as I could. That's a cool car to have and he's a lucky guy to be able to hold on to it all those years.
Fine car, great story. Tell your Uncle that I for one (of many), am thankful for his service to our country and wow, just love that Vette ! best year ever... Dale K Cleveland OH
Looks like it rolled off a used car lot in the late 60s! I would just drive it and not worry about new paint. It is worth more like that anyway.
Now that's a great story. Could be a movie! Like "Coupe DeVille" Just LOVE happy endings.........................
If he paints it he be afraid to "drive" it. Nice car, fully restored Vettes are around but not many 40 year old survivors, I'd prefer it just the way it is.
Awesome! Good for him! I would take off the rear caps and just plan on buying new rear tires at the end of the summer!
HOLY SHIT MAN! There has been a split window Vette that close to you for that many years! Why in the world did you not have this car on the road years ago brother! God bless you and your family! That car rules! You have a Stradivarius in your family my friend. Your uncle RULES!
Red/red high horse/stick/radio delete.....wow! Great car---greater story. Looks like you guys did the brakes(shiny line& m/c lid)....hope you saved the 63 only thumbscrew master cylinder core---they bring big money
