Thats Malcolm Lovelace in the 80 car. If I remember right, Toby Tobias was killed in the same area that Malcolm flipped the day before.

Hey fella's... Can any of you Offy guys, or guys that have detailed Offy books and mainly serial #'s give me any info on Offy engine # 99.

I'm thinking it's a 270, and I believe it was in a Big car. Also ran Indy.

Any info, c.i., date sold, WHO BOUGHT IT!! would be great.

    Thanks guys.

Engine #99 was sold on Sept. 1 1949 to Tuffanelli. It is 270.2 cu. in. equipped with #4 cams.

My buddy just bought this. The friend of the old owner was trying to research it, but says he couldn't find anything. He says it originally had an Offy engine in it, it now has a SBC.

Brian26, that's hard to watch. As usual it could have been much worse.

Thanks for the photos of Toby. Many good memories of a great guy and pretty fair racer, too. We were racing at Selinsgrove when we heard of his dearh. I refused to believe till the next day. Toby helped so many of us to get to the next race.

Ron, I second that. He told us before the crash that he didn't really want to run Flemington, but USAC called and asked him to come because they were gonna have a low car count and he was always was treated well by them when he went to the midwest so he went. The worst part of the night was having it happen in front of me plus shooting the crash sequence, took a while to pick up the camera again.....Rich

Toby was a great driver; to think of him as only good, means a guy never raced against Toby! Its still hard to understand why he built that car with no gussetts on the cage. If the gussetts had been there that night Toby would have survived that crash. Hard to understand.

my understanding was the problem was using 4130 that wasnt cond"N"[normalized]whether it was a mistake on Toby's part or mis-marked.Non condition n tubing will make a brittle joint. On 1.5 inch tubing you allready have almost 5 inchs of weld, questionable if another inch or so of gusset would matter?

Tony - These are my photos that were transmitted on the UPI wire service. The "AC/AC" at the end of the type are my initials as the photographer and caption writer. I still have the original negatives.

UPI paid me a whopping $25 per shot....actually not too bad back then....would be equal to about $127 today.

How did you get the UPI wire sheet?
