my next project is a 40 coupe, and want drop a chevy 348 1958,try some search over web but found nothing??any pro and cons?????thanks
The 348 was nick named "The Piston Popper" I had one in a 63 chevy during high school. Strong motor and I won several races with it. It stayed together all the way up till I sold it.
We have a 40 coupe with a 348 and B&M hydramatic that really hauls. They are a large engine but fit in the space with some modifications. I can't say they out perform a good small block but they are unusual in a 40 and would make a good driver.
I put a 348 with a Muncie 4-speed in my 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe in 1966. I used the Hurst motor mount for the application. Everything fit but I vaguely remember dimpling the firewall at the rear of the passenger side valve cover. Very impressive to look at when the hood was popped!
Wowzers, I about ruined my father/son relationship with my dad over my '58 Bel-air with 348. Would love to run one in a 39-40. Hope some guys that have done this chime-in I've always worried about the steering box clearance.
Build it with the 348 and when your finished secretly swap in a stroker 409 and take no prisoners. Frank
I tried putting one in my 39 Deluxe and had steering box interferance so pulled it back out and did the small block thing,so how did you get it in concerning the steerong box other than using a Vega or ? My project was a get it going and sell it, i have put a bunch of differant engines in 40s including a blown 392 all tucked under the hood but it wqs a keeper and the 39 was a seller so that is why i didnt spend a lot of time on the 348.It may have fit if i wanted to go the header route, but i didnt.
I'll be watching this with interest! I've got this..... and was planning on installing a 312 with tri-power... I've got the Hurst motor mount, Offenhauser adapter, aluminum flywheel, truck pan and timing cover, but need to completely rebuild the Y-block. I've got this sitting and completely rebuilt from a project I gave up on.... and have been really considering using it in the coupe. I too am curious about firewall clearance, steering clearance, and whether the frame would need to be boxed. I'm all ears!
Wow that's the color mine was when I first got it, just in really bad weathered condition. Looks like a great start. TP
I know a guy here in the Omaha area who bought his father's old hot rod a few years ago. A black 40 Ford 2dr sedan with a 348 or 409 (I don't know which and I have no idea on what it has for a transmission). Your post makes me wonder if you're talking about that same car.
Buy all the stuff to fit a BB, 454, a 348/409 is same size. Mounts sb/bb are the same, trans flange is the same Devin
I posted on this thread a while back.At the time I had a 348 motor but had no idea that I was about to get a 40 Ford coupe. I have both now and am working on this very set up.My 40 was set up for a chevy, has motor mounts in it but when I looked at where the motor sits,I realized the stock exhaust manifolds came strait down into the stock 40 steering box.Bummed me out as I was realy hoping to run stock column, front end and factory exhaust manifolds. It looks as though you either have to run headers or a Mustang II front suspension or other modified setup etc. I hope some guys who have dealt with this can share answers of what works and what doesnt.
I'm putting one in my 25 TT wrecker with a Muncy. I like the unique look more than anything. Plus I wanna do wheelies...
I’ve never seen this thread before, which is bizarre. 348 in a 40. I’ve done it in my sedan. Custom Hurst style front mount to move the motor far enough forward so that the firewall is left alone. Stock steering used, can even use stock exhaust manifolds by swapping them from side to side. Mines hooked up to a T5, again hardly any firewall or floor mods needed.
One of my favourite engines, would love one in my '32 3w......but circumstances dictate otherwise. There is guy over here in UK though with a 409/425 in his '32 5w.......
