    Yeah Im pretty sure on some 1966 327's there was a 3 digit code HCH, HCR, HAH and HAR. The HCR and HAR were not holley carbed and the HAH and HCH were

    my corvette black book has no 3 letter engine codes till 1970. i have never seen any pre 70 dated blocks with one.

    68 was the last year for the 327 in a corvette.

    block casting numbers [ on the left rear of the block]

    65 3782870
    66 3858174 some late blocks 3892657
    67 3892657

    Again, I want to keep saying this. I am no expert but based on my books a up to 68 327 corvette should have the following casting numbers on the side of the block.
    3782870
    3855962
    3858174
    3858180
    3869942
    3892657
    3903352
    3904351
    3914660
    3914678

    didnt all the hipo/corvette 327"s have the big harmonic balancer?if so if it is a vette motor it would have that.??

  13. Yeah, but 40+ yrs after the fact, any damper could be on it, as they pretty much all interchange. So, it's not a good way to determine anything

  14. We need a casting number and date off the back of the block.

    ALL 327's that went in Corvettes were cast in Flint.

    The 'extra quart' stepped pans also came in 60's 300hp/327 pickups but they didn't have a trap door.

    After more research this is what I think it is(the 3 digit suffix code) and why.
    Its a 1966 275 horse L30 327 not from a Vette. In 1966 Carter AVS carbs were used on L30 327's (only in 1966) also some Holley 4160's (according to the "The Original Chevelle Book" By Jim schild. In 1966 the A.I.R. system was introduced and only required on cars sold in CA. but the AIR system was used with a Quadrajet and used a different intake casting number 3875954. The Carter AVS and Holley 4160 that were used in 66 used the same intake with casting 3872783 witch would have been the 49 state intake for 66. In 1967 all 50 states were required to use A.I.R. 1966 was the transition year for the AIR system so in 1965 the L30 327 code for manual trans was HA for 1966 it was HAH (AVS or Holley carb) for non smog and HAR L30 327 manual trans (Quadrajet W/A.I.R.) and 1965 L30 327 with poweglide was HC 1966 was HCH (non smog) or HCR (W/A.I.R.) because all were required to have A.I.R. in 67 the code went back to just HC there was also an 1966 HB code that I found for 275 horse 327 A.I.R. That maybe at the end of the transition becuase its also used for the same code in 1967. thats my take on it anyways . and after 40 years or more whats actually inside the motor is a crap shoot anyway Mike

  16. I think the extra quart truck pans had a double chin look to them, going from the sump to the front of the pan. Very un-like the Vette pans

  17. I have a 327 block #3858174 that has the HCH at the end of the suffix code. I forget what site I found it on(been trying to find it again) but it meant it was a 275hp, passenger car, with the last H meaning a holley 4 barrel carb.

  18. I found the site, it is www.chevy-camaro.com and I correct myself HCH means 275hp, powerglide, 4barrel holley carb

    Trying to guess at what the engine is based on a Engine Code is kind of crap shoot. I am really, really curious about the cast code now. I guess they were stamped onto the block on a moving assembly line prior to the heads being put on. I could see a lot of mistakes, errors, etc. Also, after some late month in model year 1967 they went back and punched the VIN over the engine code once the motor was in the car. It was a law we came up with to combat stolen engines. I would imagine they would be especially geeky about doing this on a corvette.

    It's the truck pan.....I got the casting numbers last night. The stamp was a C not a O. Sorry for the confusion. Here's what the casting numbers are 3858180. It comes up 64-67 327 on Mortec.
    Thank you for all the help. Sorry for the mistake.
    No Vette motor, but still a cool little 327. The crank has a tapered hole in the end of it, but no threads. I guess I'll be drilling and taping it for some.

    PS I did learn a lot of stuff from you guy's posts. I read everyone.

    3858180 - "This block was used in Passenger, Chevelle, and Corvette 300 and 350 HP engines. It was used interchangeably with the #3782870 block. It had significantly thinnner cylinder walls and larger water jacket[sic]. It is unknown at this time why the design change took place and exactly which cars recieved this block." My book lists this as also being in contradiction to the quote a 250, 275, 300, 365, and 375 hp engine. HCR would be a 1966 passenger car 275 hp 327 out of a powerglide car with a rochester carb. "Passenger car" would be biscayne, bel air, caprice, imapala regular or SS.

    HI, I saw this thread and finally saw what I have been looking for. My motor in my 69 camaro has a stamped number that reads F0927HCH. The other number on block is 3858174. Does this mean I have a 327 vetter motor? Thanks so much.

    What about the crank flange? Does the flange have a single notch in it, as did All 327s?

    This was hammered into us thru the '60s & '70s, but I came up with two 283s (mid '60s truck engines) that also had the single notch. Info? Please??

  26. 3858174 blocks were used in:
    327 in 64-67 Chevrolet, Chevelle
    327 in 64-67 Truck
    327 in 66 Corvette
    350 in 68-69 Camaro, Chevelle, Nova

    Your stamp equates to:
    F=Flint MI
    09=September
    27=27th day of the month
    This set of numbers is the assembly date of the engine.

    HC=
    1969 Camaro, Nova & Chevelle 350/250HP
    1968 Chevrolet (big car) 327/250HP
    1966-67 Chevrolet 327/275HP
    1966 Corvette 327/ all horsepower

    You need the casting date off the back of the block to determine the actual year. If you have a late 1965 or 1966 date it could be Corvette but I've never heard of a Corvette with a 3 digit suffix code until 1970. I'm guessing it's the original motor to the car. Is there a partial VIN on the stamp pad?

    HCH was not a corvette code HCH would be 1966 L30 327 (275 HP w/o A.I.R.) the 69 350 code was just HC
