Two-Lane Blacktop hood scoop?

I saw a scoop like the one on the Two-lane car several months ago on ebay.

Does anyone know where I could find one of those? (Not on ebay anymore).

Also, what was that scoop made of, aluminum or fiberglass? And if aluminum, was it welded, or riveted?

Are you referring to the one on the 55 Chevy? I believe it was a hand built Aluminum peice

 

Just watched the movie again. It is aluminum... Killer movie!

 

I'm pretty sure that was just bent sheet aluminum - basically a "Grump Lump" scoop.

How much does Chad charge?

 

There was a 60's Ford Dump truck that had a scoop similar to the 2 lane Blacktop car.

in one of the hot rod books i believe they showed how to make that scoop.ill look for it again. but speedway sells the fiberglass scoop.

 

The scoops are originally Ford and were used on the Big Job trucks (semis). Pontiac bought the scoops from Ford for use on the Super Duty cars.

yeah i know , i was just seeing if anyone would say something i heard guy at a swap meet say something to the effect of

a ford guy will give ya 20.00 bucks all day for that scoop a pontiac guy will give ya 200.00 all day for the same scoop

 

LOL...I should have realized that.
Sometimes it actually happens. I bought a Ford scoop last year at a swap meet complete with the lower duct work. I paid $35. I sold it (just the scoop (later for $235 + shipping.
Very out of character for me, usually I buy high and sell low.....

Hey Brad , contact Little T on here he built a blacktop car ,and built the scoop from dimentions he got of the real one[he can tell you how he got them]. actually he is changing the car and is selling the entire ft clip and is looking for a stock steel ft clip . Mine is riveted aluminum.

 

The Sept. 2010 issue of Hot Rod Deluxe has an article on how to build one. Probably cheaper and easier to find that on Ebay.

a decade or two ago I made one very similar for my ot truck, a '67 C10 with dual quad tunnel rammed BBC

but I think to be true to the traditional you need a "Grump Lump",
originally a cover off a piece of farm equipment if memory serves...rototiller..?

 

The guy who made the scoop that was on ebay was a member here; he sent me a sketch and some dimensions.
I used it to write that story in Hot Rod Deluxe.

This is an old thread I know, but I had a question about making a scoop similar to this....if you were trying to build it to a 60s style, would it ever have been welded? I would assume not, thinking that rivets would be more in style at that time. Anybody who was around back then, would somebody back in the day had it welded, or would that have been pretty rare? Trying to keep my avatar falcon as close to 60s as possible.

 

Incase anyone wants to make their own.

 

I loved that car and the movie,but am I the only one that thought that scoop was fugly?

Granted it did look cool shaking around when James Taylor was rowing through the gears as the film was melting. HRP

 

Well mine will be a little different, but I was still wondering about welding vs. riveting as far as period correct

 

I'd think pop rivets,
aluminum welding was (and is) a bit exotic for most home builders

 

Wouldn't sheet metal screws be more traditional? HRP
