Here is one of my uncle's cement truck in Quincy, Ill on July 5th, 1951.
A full load of cement and the ground/street just caved in as he was leaving a stop light. They had to lower a 12' ladder into the pit so he could climb out. The only injury was to his pants!!!

That's a swell jacket yer uncles got there. I get so lost in all these old pics, looking at the people and the clothes and the cars, all the little details that we no longer have.

    so cool

  6. What's the odds that some mayor's uncle had a brick factory back in the day?

HEY! Look at most of the men.... they are baldheaded so it might be another type RUG SALE????

  18. I found this photo in a second-hand store many, many years ago, and bought it [and 2 others] simply because of the motorcycles in them. Little did I know I'd be into hot rods eventually! Also here's what was written on the back. Any old-timers know these cats?

It was real common in the Midwest when I was a kid, slicker than snot when it rains though. Most around here have been blacktopped over but there are still a few around.

It wasn't the cobblestones fault for the collapse.
Probably undermined by a leaky water main.
Those old streets held up very well.
There are still a few in Lockport. They don't seem to break up like pavement does.
But they were a little rough, but in a city with 30 mph speed limit, they worked great.

We still have a few brick streets here in Dayton Ohio that are not paved over.

Check out the Laclede's Landing area of St. Louis for some good old cobblestone streets................ok, maybe the good part is a stretch.
