  2. Back in the 50's we cruised Lake street in Minneapolis and University Av. in Saint Paul. Also remember "Poop Deck Pappy's drive-in near Lake Calhoun at Excelsior Blvd and Lake street west. Boy, that was a long time ago!

A friend of mine had a 48 Austin with a 327 and Muncie and he used do little wheelies through that A&W until one day he brake an "A" frame. I used to cruise with him in it, it was definatley a death trap over 50 MPH.

Back in the 60's when I lived in Mansfield Ohio I cruised Park Avenue West and hung out at Manner's Big Boy. We would also cruise out to Porky's on the East side of town. Great food, cool cars and pretty ladies!!! :D Wow what a flash back

Ran on St. Georges ave. from Perth Amboy to Elizabeth New Jersey. Had to be about 25 miles between them and racing from light to light all the way. Then turn around and go the other way. I guess they would call that cruising. Ran a 1958 Chevy Del Ray with a 348, three twos, solid cam and 4 speed. I wish to hell I had it now.

I started cruising Speedway when I turned 16 in 1977, it was fun, but it died off in the mid 80s. There sure were a lot of cars out on the middle of town there. Bob's (at swan) was kind of the center of it all wasn't it?

By then I was way gone from Tucson (came back in '80) but do remember more and more people hanging out at the strip malls and Bob's along Speedway during the '70s on return visits home. In the late '60s, folks would meet at the Craycroft Johhny's and head out to the Catalina Highway for some midnight drags before there was much home building out there. After the policia broke up the drags (they'd turn on their lights miles before they got there, providing ample warning for those paying attention,) you'd find all sorts of guys back at Johnny's, recapping headers and dusting off their cars after their through-the-desert getaways. :D

Those were my spots as well. Started a little later than you though, 87-88ish. That was a LOT of fun. McDonald's and Burger King on Central were the REAL hot spots too. Lot's of trash talkin took place there. Super Shops was a parking spot of mine too. I got 2 tickets in one night on Mill for cruising. It was kind of hard for a sub lime green Challenger to blend in with the other cars. I really missed it when they put the kabosh on it. Lot's of memories there. We used to head east down McDowell to about 7th st to turn around. My friends would stand up in the car (68 Camaro convertible) and flick pennies at the hookers. Good ol fashioned innocent fun!!

Shit! I didn't think ANYONE here would know of Lower river road! That's the only place I was back in Highschool. Drinkin, shootin, or racing!

Yeah it was the "gut". Hwy 99 turns into Main (hwy 99 being the north end of town).

I cruised Kearney St. in Springfield, Monett and the Branson loop in the late 80's. Summer of '88 was the last summer Kearney was open, the city enacted a cruising ordinance that fall.

I drove a black '56 Chevy 2-Dr post, my best friend had a chevy luv stepside with a 283 in it. Good times.

There's got to be more folks out there that cruised Genesee St in Waukegan. You could sit thru a lite 3 x's! People from (N) Kenosha, (S) North Chicago and (W) Grayslake would be there every nite in summer and Friday to Sunday during school. So many really great cars you had a blast just looking at the custom paint jobs or watching a challenge between lites (they held up traffic) laid down for the race later. Sailors from Great Lakes would bring their cars (though it wasn't always safe for them) and challenge the local talent. AND the police were generally cool too. I think even they appreciated the cars. Great time. Oh and gnichols (2) of my cousins graduated in '67. My cousin Rich Fonda had a couple well known cars and bike. Then he went to Viet Nam end of '67.

My era was 74 thru 79. Drove a 70 big block 4 spd. Challenger with a few mods. Ran 11.40 a Carlsbad in Ca.when I sold it. Was fast for the times not so much now. Was the only car I wish I had back.

    73super,

Did you ever cruise Riverside in Spokane? That was one busy street back in the 70's. I used to cruise it in a pink '56 caddy, of all things.

    Hey Randy
Remember those days and places well. A good friend and I put 300 miles on his 51 Chevy coupe one night and didn't leave the city limits. Couldn't stay awake that long now!!
