True Hollywood!!! Did you hear about vanishing point 3? Someone slipped Einstein some acid and he starts thinking about the future. He wonders what really happened to Eddie Wilson after they found his car and theorizes Eddie was teleported through time by the Philadelphia Experiment to "Eddie Lives E+CII" because it would be impossible in the future for a celebrity to drop off the face of the earth and live secretly under an assumed name. The Ghost of Einstein meets Eddie in the future and Eddie cannot remember the Eldridge and barely remembers the accident. Einstein must help Eddie return to the USS Eldridge to turn off the generators thus collapsing the time-space confusium. Eddie can now account for the missing time.... And...For no apparent reason Einstein then races cross country in a dodge challenger with police in hot pursuit.
The scene with the hitchhiker (Charlotte Rampling) was pulled from the US before its release, it was on the european release. If you purchase the DVD, it is pretty inexpensive it has both versions. But the best part of all is watching it once, then watching it again with the directors commentary running. Very interesting! Lot of inside info, and behind the scenes stories. One of my favorites of all time.
I drove the #2 stunt car from the remake, from Denver to the California border. We took the route from Denver through all the original towns in the movie... Drove over the same land, saw the same buildings... Stood in the hotel where Super Soul did his radio show, climbed around the ruins of the diner/service station where they parked the bull dozers. The people out there are still nuts, too, from the people with the AK47 in the front seat of the truck in front of their house who watched us through the drapes but wouldn't answer the door when we knocked, to the guy who hauls scrap metal off the prairie and smelts the aluminum out of it, to the crusty old guy who yelled "All right you God Damn camera pimps! That's enough--pack your shit and git out!" after telling us we could take a picture in front of his garage. -Brad

All the old car movies rule! Vanishing Point, The original Gone in 60 Seconds, Two Lane Blacktop, Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, The California Kid, I grew up on that stuff and it has warped me into the man I am today! The newer movies are set up more for the mainstream than us.
You know the sad part of all of this? The hot, tanned, naked blonde girl is more than 60 years old now! Now, don't THAT make ya feel ancient? I liked BOTH versions, for different reasons. Remakes are NEVER the same as the original, so I did not expect a scene-for-scene redo, anyway. Plus the original was set in 1971, the remake was in 1997; so obvious differences there, too, even if a 1971 Challenger was in both. I'd forgot that the "derelict" car was actually a truck. That was the truck that was used by the old guy who trapped rattlers for that religious cult that Kowalski encountered. It's got the Ford jailbar grille, so it's a '46 - '48, as stated earlier by someone else. The car bodies though...I was thinking of those, too; does anyone know what those two are pictured above?
Speaking of California Kid, I recently bought the DVD out of the $5 bargain bin at a Bi-Mart. I forgot how good of a movie that was, and was amazed at how that '34 must have handled to slide like that. Tell me Pete Chapouris doesn't know his stuff when it comes to hot rods!
All, Excellent Movies. Id rather watch a Movie with the car in the studio and the Driver bouncing around in the seat before a Remake... The new Movies that are comptuter generated are a Cheap way to make more Money.. those bite.. I dont even think the Back grounds are Real. we all know most scenes are made up on a Computer screen... even the Crash scenes....My opinion... Originallity is the Best..

I agree but have you seen the action packed double feature Grindhouse? QuentinTarrantino did an Homage to pulp drive in b movies. He made the movies look old and beat up and filmed the car action high speed in real time with real stunts and no special effects. My favorite gag was Kurt Russel's character. Stunt Man Mike... a "dirty old man" wearing a team icy hot racing jacket. They didn't destroy any cherries. If you get close look through the movie it's obvious the charger (prolly an old Dukes stunt car) and the challenger have been beat to hell and hammered back out all over... Mopar seems to be the brand of choice when it comes to beating the marque to crap in movies or TV shows though! My guess is that they're just tough old critters and can take the beating until the movies in the can. Glad to hear that only the lame were sacrificed though...kinda like the Deuces that used to be run on the dirt tracks...just old junk that nobody would EVER want! I wonder why they used a Camaro in the VP bulldozer scene? Surely the multiple Challengers were junk by the time the film ended and one could have been sacrificed. Ultimately Chrysler had them all crushed anyway so I can't figure why...unless they were afraid they might hurt the Dozers with that tough as nails Challenger body!

Yes! I have Deathproof on DVD as well as Hellride, even though it is not a car movie, my Tarantino madness all started with Pulp Fiction. Deathproof is the closest thing I've seen to the old car movies in quite some time.
Yeah Stuntman Mike sure sissied up. I love when he got shot and screamed. By not being cherries I'm trying to say at the beginning of the movie they looked like something I dragged home for nothing and "restored" with used parts not something Chip foose built. there's alot of stuff looks like it just doesn't fit right on the cars, panel alignment and such. the charger has wavy bumpers and some non chrysler body english lurking in the flat black. the charger looks like a rough car that got new skins and paint for the flick
They used Challengers for a few reasons, new car and body style , lots of power, handled well and most importanlty jumped well . For some reason I researched this movie in school for a report. so this is faint recolection at best LOL they used 3 or 4 cars only for whole movie 3 440 4spd cars and one 383 auto. 2 had differant camera views for driving, one for jumps/stunts and the 383 car was used to tow the camaro shell into trailer. It was at time a low budget film, only car damaged was the jumper, other challengers were supposedly returned and sold on dealer lots. Camaro was used for obvious reasons,probably less than 10% of people relaised it was a camaro and it was a whole lot cheaper to get a shell from junkyard than to destroy a new challenger . The story line was adopted based on some true stories in paper at time and meshed together . We used to call one of my friends kulwowlski (sp) cause he was tall and lanky with messed up hair and drove a white 70 challenger
For those watching Grindhouse, did you notice the Challenger had window frames in the doors for the stunt woman to tie the belts to? Challengers didn't have window frames in the doors.............
I was just some of the lucky ones that saw all the great car movies at the drive in ! I can't think of one remake that even comes close to the real movie . Vanishing Point , Gone in 60 sec & 2 Lane Blacktop were cult classics . The reason most don't get it is because you weren't there at that time in history to really enjoy some of the greatest car movies that were ever made ! Like someone else said , these were real stunts and driving , not a computer enhanced movie ! The car movies today just aren't as good as the ones in the 50's , 60's , 70's , even with all the blue ray and whatever crap they have now . Those car movies were believable unlike the ones made today ! As for the "Nude Blond" on the bike in the desert , well he must have had too many "Bennie's" in him to turn her down when she asked him if he wanted to bang her ! I have them all in my movie collection and look for some I missed everyday . RetroJim
VP is one of my all time favorite movies. Couldn't believe they released VP on blu-ray. Found it at a used movie store. And I never realized they did a remake of VP.
I think this came up in the BJ auction telecast Sat. But what happened to the car(s) that were used in the film?
Vanishing Point is one of, if not my favorite film. I get that same authentic feel that I get when watching Woodstock, except VP is a work of fiction, which makes it even stranger. This movie is supernatural.
That's not true. The hemi e bodies used a rear sump oil pan. Other BB oil pans were center sump. He probably could have used the pick up from another BB with the center sump if it was the same diameter. Great movie! The second one was a bit wishy washy but I liked it anyway. And there goes the Challenger, being chased by the blue, blue meanies on wheels. ........the last beautiful free soul on this planet.
I first saw it when I was a kid staying up late one night when it was on tv in the early 80s. I was devastated when he bit the bullet at the end, but even then I got it, and could see from pretty early on the ending wasn't going to be a happy one. I got the dvd a couple of years ago with director Sarafians comments throughout, and thats really interesting. When you listen to him you realise the movie was a lot deeper than many give it credit for. I haven't watched it for a year or so, but I'm sure he said they had about 7 or 8 Challengers, and that when they only had one left it was stolen by a prostitute that had been hanging out with one of the crew members! Not sure why, but he didn't mention why they used a Camaro for the crash scene. Max Balchowsky, who built the successful Buick Nailhead powered road race sportscars in the 50s and 60s using junkyard parts was in charge of maintaining the Challengers. A couple of other enjoyable flicks from the 70s that aren't so well known were The Last American Hero, The Driver, Aloha Bobby And Rose, and Greased Lightning.
If you can find a copy of the DVD they where selling a couple of years ago, you can watch the movie with the directors commentary and he tells all kinds of facts about the film. Like how Chrysler offered the cars for the movie, to get exposure for their new Challenger. The director took one look at the car, and said the cars where perfect. Also there is a story he tells of people hanging around the filming sets, and somebody stole the star car, they eventually got the car back to finish the shoot. At the end when Chrysler got to see the finished product, they didn't want there name associated with a movie with a drug theme.
Yep that's how I saw it. I have seen VP several times since, but not DHnCM. Shows on satellite every once in a while. I DVR'd it the last time it was on. Going to have to burn it to a disc I guess.
