I used the idea in an old American Rodder magazine. I modified it to suit my electric motor, and the scrap steel I had on hand. The 12" disk is for a Shopsmith, about $20 on Ebay. I used a piece of 1/2" plate for the motor base: I measuerd the bolt holes: I used the old spray paint and cheap caliper marking trick: You can also use a square: Center punch before drilling:
I deviated from the design here, as my motor is pretty big: I welded nuts insede my steel tube(hard to weld inside a tube). These will be for the mounting bolts, as well as leveling bolts: I made the table out of 3/8". Ready for paint and a new piece of sandpaper:
How did you mount the disk to the motor? Was the motor shaft threaded or does the disk have some kind of set screw set up?
It had a 7/8" shaft; I had to do some lathe work, but a motor with a 5/8" shaft would mount right up to the Shopsmith disk, with a set screw to secure it. I was just using the motor I had on hand instead of looking for one with a 5/8" shaft. I don't know if that is a common size or not. I actually bored the removeable back part of the Shopsmith disk, but I had poor lighting in my little machine shop shed, and I over bored it. i happened to break part of the v-belt pulley when I pulled it off the motor, so I cut it off and faced the remaining pulley. I then drilled and tapped four 8-32 holes and bolted it up to the disk. I am using the existing key and setscrew. I can take some pics if need be.
Kustombuilder did a thread similar to this one only his was in the planning stages based off what 2 friends of his built. I'm, sure he will post what his ended up looking like after he sees this. Frank

That isn't his sander. That's the one he was going to copy. My point being............he's never finished ANYTHING that he has posted about on here. If you can source something to the contrary please post it. Frank
Picked up a complete 12" disk sander off of Espay last night for $10... unless I got scammed... Even if it turns out to be junk, I still get the disk itself pretty cheap- then I can go "motor huntin"!

i made one from those plans in American Rodder when it came out , so i have been using it for almost 17 years. i made my own wheel out of solid steel since at the time i had access to a BIG lathe
