I'm not the least bit biased. I've had 3 55's, NINE 56's, and 2 57's. GET THE 56!!!!! They're the "least" popular of the tri-fives; everyone knows what a 57 looks like, and all the gasser guys like 55's, so, buck the "trend" and go 56. Butch/56sedandelivery.
Can you buy the 56 and trade it for the 55,if so you could take the 1500 you saved and put it towards making the 55 (you really want) more complete.
If you want a 55, buy a 55. $7500 sure seems high to me for a roller, it had better be pretty nice. It's a buyers market right now, I would be either making a lowball offer, or continue looking for a better buy. I bought a nice solid 55 hardtop in October for $6500, it came with a 327 and auto, and with some wiring and general tuning-upping, it's a runner. Heres a suppose to be solid roller for around 7500 and it may be worth it but when you consider there are some decent drivers out there for around 10 and less I wouldnt give it but I guess alot depends on what you are willing to spend and what level of car you expect to have when you are done.
Get a '55. No matter how nice the '56 comes out in the end, everytime you see a '55 you'll still want one.
I think all the tri-fives are bad a$$ed. If you put the same parts on each one it would be hard for me to decide. 55 has style, 56 has class, 57 is a classic.
I am no expert on early chevies, but if you change the front sheet metal and the tail lights could you not achieve the look you desire?
55's rockers curve out before they roll under..56's&7's (and up just about) just curve under. 55 chevy's are my Favorite(if anybody cares) 56's are the most expensive out of thhe tri 5's .. just compare the taillight prices & how many front end parts there are A 56 w/ no mouldings, weld the holes closed (lnfluenced by a '55-150 series) an a nose up stance would also be "Different"

There are a LOT of 55 gassers out there, I would get the 56 cause it sounds like a better deal. And to be different
I would go with the 55. Think Harrison Ford in American Graffitti. That is one car that gives me a semi!!!
If your like me, my mind changes and my projects change constantly. The 55 sounds pretty high for a starting point. You could always offer what you want to give for it and walk away if he does not want to deal. The 56 sounds like a good deal. I like all the tri 5's about the same. I have had a 55, 56 and now have a 57 handyman. If the 56 is close to being on the road, "I" would get it, DRIVE it and when you find the 55 you want and you still want it, Sell off the 56 or trade it off. Hell, it doesn't matter what you do, it will be wrong. If you buy the 55, it will be a money pit with tons of hidden treasures , if you buy the 56, you will find a 55 for half the price and twice the condition, and if you don't buy either, it will be 4 years before you find another.
