    More California scenes.

North Lake Tahoe near Stateline, c60:

Nut Tree, 1937, along Highway 40 between the bay area and Sacramento. That big tree was the real nut tree and it was removed after WWII when they widened the road from two lanes shown here to four lanes and divided the roadway:

Keep in mind that film ran faster in the really old days so the SF scenes were not as hectic as they might appear on the DVD. Love to see it though!

General Curtis LeMay, the man who firebombed Japan with B-29s and later formed the Strategic Air Command, with one of his Corvettes. He allowed organized road racing events on many USAF air bases in the fifties but then the enlisted men complained (as did their wives) because they had to "volunteer" to staff the weekend racing events and that put an end to the runway road races. (One of the few times that bitching and moaning, a military right and tradition, actually put an end to something.) Lemay was a bona fide car nut.

  6. A lot of great old pictures in this thread. But this one looks like a recent picture of NIMROD's shop and rides.

101 southbound at Torrey Pines State Beach. La Jolla in the distance. Looked on Google Earth and found the location. That highway bridge is still there but one lane each way now.

  12. It looks almost identical to this pic today less the cool cars. And, believe it or not, there is less traffic today than in this pic. The 5 fwy now runs parallel and frees up the 101 for sightseers, cruisers and surfers.

This is a great pic! Thanks for posting it!

I think this is a version of it that shows some post earthquake footage as well kind of oddly mixed and match together back and forth - yep, seems the road rules were a bit more free back in those days.

More excellent pics, liked the mailman pics and the aussie chrysler plant pics a few pages back. Had an aussie valiant wagon a few years ago myself.
Also interesting spotting the odd English cars in America. Like spotting the US iron in old UK pics.
Also surprising that although I have seen some of the pics before, the vast majority are new to me at least.
Thanks to all contributors, enjoyed this thread a lot.
    Mart.
