Beijing Motor Museum - China

PLEASE NO POLITICAL POSTS - Just about the cars!

Went to the Beijing Motor Museum which was really hard to find but worth the trip.
Quite a few US cars but also some interesting local iron that could be used for customs.



Really cool VW bus - check out the different lights etc

Finally some car art. The first is a BMW coupe made from bricks, The molten merc seemed to be Alum. Both these were at an Art Precinct, 798 in Beijing City. Yep not HAMB friendly but cool all the same.

Here's 2 weird trucks that I saw in China last year.

Those look exactly like the factory Ford Ranger wheels I used on my Aerostar years ago. Imagine, a part on a Chinese car with "Made in America" on it!! (oops, sorry).

 

Verrrrry interesting !! Did,nt see anything that looked like a Holden did you ? The oddball cars are mostly GAZ, Pobeda, Warsawa, Chaika. All Eastern European. Like the Austin A40 Somerset.

 

There are a number of Soviet built cars in your photos - the big ZIL and ZIS were mainly used as transport for dignitaries and bigwigs, which were derived from Packards built in Russia under licence. Then there were Wartburgs, Volgas, Moskovich, GAZ, Zaphrozhets and a few more. Oops - 34 GAZ types faster than me and named a few I missed.

A few British Austins in there too - but the Austin is not an A40 Somerset, it's bigger and is an A70 Hereford I think - my grandad had one. Thanks for an interesting thread.

 

That must be the Luo Wenyou Classic Car Museum! Did it look like this on the outside?

Interesting that most of the American cars don't look to be restored. More like they were just pulled off the street and stuck in the museum dirt & all.

 

I never thought of my cars as museum-quality, but I guess it depends on the museum........

It is weird to see cars on pedestals with less tire care than a US daily driver, and WTF is the deal with that healy badge? (that is an austin healy with big flares, isn't it?) Did a US kitcar company farm out some fab work or wishful history?

I'm digging the accents in the headlight rings on those black state limo/sedan/convertible things. That touch could work on a kustom with a vertical bar grille.

It appears the only thing not made in china is a sanding block

 

Yep, your right. About 5 years ago i had an A70 Pickup and two A40 Convertibles. I Should have seen the difference.

Did you notice the jacked up mercedes with wide tires?

 

The 'Healey' is actually a fiberglass kit car called a Sebring MX 5000 a US product if I am not mistaken - there are a couple around here I see at cruise nights occasionally.

 

Interesting how they don't even wash them. Wonder if it's a desire to keep them realistic looking, or they just don't care?

 

All old cars have a story..just wonder what the story was to ultimately end up in China...crazy! Interesting thread, thanks!

I'm digging the vertical tail light that's clear with an inset Red lens. Frenched into a 51 merc maybe?


I gotta wonder also at the upkeep. Guess the car museums over there have the same cost issues as here. They sure could use a few guys with chrome polish, glass cleaner, and tire dressing, not to mention a bucket of soapy water!

 

The majority of the museums I've been to out of the country, are very different from what I'm used to anyways with the Blackhawk or the Peterson, and many of the others in the US.

In the UK they seem to have had shopping list of what they wanted, tooled around used car lots until they found one - not really worried about the condition. Now I can say all of my cars are museum quality

The Haynes Museum (the repair book publisher) has 150+ red cars, in one huge space - all you see is red. I can post a link to my pics if anyone is that interested, not really Hamb cars but....

 

thanks fo posting. several years ago some japanese guys came over and bought several hundred model a's,32's,packards ,hudsons and rolls out of our museum to start something like this. we had a big send off for them. they didn't have a big building to store them in so they put them all under a highway overpass. earthquake hit and crushed them all....hope the chinese can build a better building to preserve these.

 

......but they've all been taken apart and photographed like a HAMB car
