I would love to see a thread that focuses on the exotic power plants that power some of these awesome machines. Didn't masserati have a hot dohc 302ci v8? And the some of the Can-Am motors.

The Chaparral pics are amazing and it's great to know that most of them still exist. The bottom pic looks alot like the Cox Chaparral slot car I raced as a kid and one of the things that started my whole car addiction. The slotcar must have been a slightly earlier version though because it didn't have the "gills" on the fenders.

Bill Vukovich, the "Mad Russian" from Fresno, Ca. 2 time Indy winner and died there trying for a third. He raced cars like these every night back in the 40s and 50s.

 

Might even have been a later version... or a team car, depending on whether it was Jim Hall, Roger Penske or Hap Sharp driving. Hall usually had the more innovative parts on his car, while the team cars were more "standard". That's one of the reasons Hall is known more as a designer than a driver. He was as good as anyone, but his cars had problems more often than his teammates. The louvers were an early attempt to kill lift by allowing the trapped air to escape from under the car. Hall's way of thinking about aerodynamics changed the entire face of racing...

this is how i got the racing 'bug'.
these cars were some of the best and most fun to drive cars ever made.
mom had one to get her up 'the ridge' on those slippery,snowy days and dad had one for a company car for his schoolbus contracting.
when the yuppies gave the 99's a bad name mom went back to buicks and dad went back to pu's and i went to the v4's
still have a New 850 engine and some Montie Carlo stuff, one of the guys in our club has several old 'dealership' racers,someday........

 

Here's one I bought that had been sitting under a shed since the late 80's. Kept it for a couple of years and just recently traded it to a friend for a 64 Impala SS.

 

The 1958 Scarab, built by Lance Reventlow's band of hot rodders in So-Cal. Three of these were built. The Scarab was the ultimate in front engine sports racing cars and was still winning races nationally in 1963. The guys who worked on these cars is a whos-who of American racing.

Any photos of "Monsterati"? It was a homebuilt special built around a Corvette Feulie engine. Saw it in the late '80s at the Historic Races at Portland, OR. Ran very well. Awesome car.

 

Three of my favourites from New Zealand. Red Dawsons Chevy powered Willys coupe. Ron Sylvesters SBC powered '38 Chevy coupe. And Garth Souness' low light Morris Minor. The Morris Minor actually started life as a Ferrari Super Squalo F1 car which had been in NZ for several years. Souness was a car dealer, and had it sitting on his car lott, but nobody was interested in it. So he had the Ferrari chassis shortened, fitted a small block Chev, and draped the Morris Minor body on top and went racing.

 

Man.....that 1938 Willys coupe is so cool. Thats a picture of a Willys coupe you dont see everyday, thanks for sharing!!!
