I have been begging my wife for this book. Can somebody explain to me how a shrinking disk works? Also Once I get it what is a decent set of hammers and dollies? I am going to be working on my 1956 ford f100 come spring
Happy Birthday, i'm well past my 40th but recall it well. It was brutal! Great book, one that i've read more than once.
The shrinking disc is a friction tool. It creates heat by spinning on the surface of the metal. You can shrink high spots, highlite low spots, make reverse shapes by shrinking where you want a valley etc. I show the tool in use on my youtube videos below. John www.ghiaspecialties.com
a shrinking disc not always been around.i only discovered it 3 yrs ago since moving to the States and ive been in the trade for 19 yrs now. I learnt shrinking metal the old fashioned way of using an oxy acet torch,spot heating the area to cherry red then using an aluminium hammer (alum doesn't stretch the the steel when hammered)and a hand weight to hammer around the 'cherry red hot spot' in a clock or anti clock wise motion.then cool with water or air. that taught me more of the principals and involved more of a skill process.the shrinking disc is a great tool ,and is great for 'light highs 'in your panels.
Will a metal shrinking disc work on a dent? I have a 56 F100 that has a couple of shots on the roof that need to be worked. They are "innies"(low spots) dents. I just watched this video on youtube and was curious http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8cruauERmI&feature=related
