My radio flyer wagon project for my daughter...

My fiance and I are having a baby girl this coming February, so what better thing to do then make a hot rod Radio Flyer for her and the dog to cruise around with.

Started with an old Radio Flyer Special wagon which I quickly dissassembled


made a simple rear drop axle from 3/4" steel tubing and some short pieces of 1/8th inch thick flat stock


rear mocked up, nice and low


front axle made from 3/4" tubing as well, just angled cuts, welded, and ground smooth


front spindles being made


chassis


bought some threaded clevis's to use as tie rod ends, but they were fine thread and too small, so i drilled and tapped them to 5/16



front end linkage assembled





basically where i'm at now, everything is mocked up the way i like it. still need to get some bolts and stuff, and fab up a new pull handle, but i'm really pleased how it's come out so far.

Neat project. You'll have a good time hauling her around in that and she'll probably be the envy of the little boy hot rodders by time she is walking.

Needs a shifter, at the very least. Lights, hood ornament, hubcaps, maybe some crazy spaghetti noodle exhaust pipes. I look at it like this... you could have left a perfectly good wagon alone, but if you've come this far, is a little more going to hurt it?

 

That's cool as hell. Just make sure there is enough room between the wagon and the rear wheels so little fingers can't get hurt in between them.

Thanks for all the comments guys, but I need some advice here. My original plan was to paint the frame and everything flat or semi gloss black, and paint the tub a pink candy color with metal flake or something along those lines to make it a little more girly. But now that I see it assembled like this, I'm thinking of not painting it, and keeping the patina. I'm not sure what to do.

 

Paint it. Little kids dont like tetnus shots either.

 

I vote paint it. Girls & girlfriends often don't get the whole patina thing. Too bad that chrome plating is so expensive... I was gonna suggest some kind of 'flake job, seems you already have that plan cookin'! Way cool project, please keep the pix coming!

 

You could leave the outside patina, and just 'bedliner' the inside so that there's a clean surface to keep the baby from getting lock jaw.

Hmmm, now the wheels are turning again, I like that idea.

I wish it was still flea market season here on the East Coast, I'd pick up another wagon and make one to keep with patina, and one to paint. The new Radio Flyers are 100 bucks at Walmart or Amazon! That's insane to me.
