Does anyone remember those cards from the early sixties? You got the skick of gum and some stats were printed on the back. My favorite car claimed to have been painted with over 900 bottles if fingernail pollish!
When I was a kid there were vending machines in the arcade at Whalom Park with the big cards.I wish I still had the ones I bought!Recently I've picked up some smaller ones on ebay.
I did not know about big cards. Those would be more like something that you could display like a pict. in your room! Great stuff for a hot rod kid man! I took those little cards to school and looked at them all day and showed them to anybody who would look. I am pretty sure that my favrorite was of a Starbird car.
Yep, those are the ones! Thanks for posting. I got on ebay and found some there. Looks like I got something new to collect!
Well, there's another thing I can say I learned because of the HAMB. I never knew there were hot rod trading cards. Love to have one of those!
Don't remember those, but I had a fat stack of "Odd Rods" cards and stickers, same deal, a stale stick of gum and several cards.
I dug out my Hot rod cards. Dean your card is # 8 in the spec sheet.I forget about these until i went to a card show about 12 years ago with my son that was a wresting fan.We went to got autografts and i found some of these. It took a few shows but i got a full set of them ,there is 66 in the set.I think there were out new in early 60s. I also have some the same size that are from Barris. Also have some that are from International championship auto show that are 3x5 cards. I will check if i have a double of that card. Thanks Marwyn
I got a bunch of them one time from a guy I work with. He came up to me and sayed hey you like old hot rods I got something for you. He gave me a big stack of them.
Have been collecting these things for 40 years. Here is a link to a reference I am building on my website: http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Automobilecards.htm Jon.
I think these are the arcade cards you are refering to...I know I have a couple more of them around somewhere. The five cent pack of Hot Rod cards were a little before my time, I must have missed them by about two years. The first cards I bought were Green Hornet and Batman. Around 1970 Fleer came out with AHRA Drag Racing cards, I bought all the cards they offered, unfortunatly I don't have them anymore.
Man, Jon! I checked out your website and you are one collecting fool! I added ya to my favorites. Got to get me some cards and records!
I have a full set of "Hot Rod" trading cards, plus a huge amount of arcade cards. On top of there is a large collection of postcards featuring racecars of all kinds (mostly LSR and drag racing), plus lots of kustoms, factory prototype and "dream cars". Eveything is organized in albums and plastic sheets for preservation.
All I have left of my childhood collection is the Big John Mazmanian one. He signed it for me at March Meet a few years ago. But I wish I had 'em all again, after seeing this collection - wow!
I have several sets of those but I'm pretty sure they were'nt released until sometime in the 80's or later.
imitation".........cracks me up!!!!! we call them itchy or itchies in the north-northeast <!-- / message --><!-- attachments --> <FIELDSET class=fieldset><LEGEND>Attached Thumbnails</LEGEND> </FIELDSET> Very interesting card! That is Buzz Pitzen with what was one of the first fiberglass body T-Buckets built. He didn't build the body, though. It was done by Diablo Speed Shop in Northern California that also made fiberglass deuce grille shells.
Ihad a few hot rod ones from, I guess the 60s but I lost them in a bushfire. Would love to see them again!
There was also a set of 30 cards that came in cigarette packs in the late 40's, one card per pack. They weren't hot rod cards, but rather stock factory cars from the turn of the century through the 40's. They were quite small by comparison to collector cards, they fit on the side of the pack. I do have a full set here somewhere, but havent seen them in quite awhile. This thread made me think of them.
search weet bix here and yourll find a thread i started about the cards that kiwis got with our breakfast cereal in the 70s. when i started the thread, i was hoping to see some american ones. not many surfaced so its good to see something similar.
I have a set of those also. I bought them from Roth at one of the old rat fink reunions , and for what ever reason had him autograph them .
Here are some of the New Zealand cards from the early 70's. There were also some Roth like bubblegum cards but I have never scanned them.
The larger format cards, about 3-1/2" x 5-1/2" were often found in vending machines made by Exhibit Supply Corp and can date back to the 40's or earlier. They dispensed all kinds of cards including movie stars, sports heroes, and peep show girls. The machines could also be found at the International Championship Auto Shows of the 50's and 60's....check the bottom photo of a machine I used to own (why did I sell that?) ...Ha, for two pennies you got a card!! Also included an example of a typical card from the day. This one's for Bob37.... the famed Kassa Coupe. Exhibit Supply Machine.....2 cents only gets you somebody's opinion these days !
