60s Vans making come back?

I built both of those vans and was driving the early 69 chevy wit custom frame bu$ilt from 8"steel channel and the complete drive line from a recked 73 blazer. My current van is a 1965 econoline with a 289 and Holman Moody graphics still vanning and by the way we were not in any van clubs.

 

How much chop is that?

I'm glad you got to talk to the guy who has it now. Thankfully, it sounds like it's in the hands of someone who'll care for it the way it should be. Unfortunately, vans often don't get much respect. All too often I see vans bought from customizers who pour years into them, only to get trashed and end up in boneyards. I'm glad yours escaped that fate.
That said, I thought you might like to see my project of the past 4 years.
This is what I started with:



and after a few custom mods:








This van is also running a "hopped up" 360, stroked to 413. Currently it's back in the garage, and I'll be completely rebuilding the front end, as soon as the control arms get back from the chrome shop.

 

5 inch chop, body seams welded, rain gutters shaved, side doors removed. Tops of front wheels were cut out and flat tops installed about 2 1/2 inches lower. Seats were 914 Porsche with seat tracks and square tube framing. I am 6'1" and had plenty of head room. Front vent windows were removed. Rear spoiler is metal at same angle as windshield, rear flares were hammer-welded.

I am. Early 30s. I remember hearing about vans and seeing some pics. But some of these are cool. Maybe my idea of cool has matured in the last few years.

 

Holmes,alotta kids your age were conceved in Vans.............. and it would be hard to believe what was acceptable at van ins compared to events today,Hell who do ya think invented the beerbong??? a Vanner

 

haha- the first time i ever saw a prismatic "Gas, Grass, or @ss, Nobody rides for Free" decal, was like 10 yrs old and stopped to check out some van while riding my bike. That was an eye opener

 

Stone, it surprises me that you haven't seen any cool ones in your area. There's quite a few vanners between Raleigh and Rocky Mount. One of the oldest custom van shops on the east coast is still in business on Winchester Rd in Rocky Mount.

 

As touched on, at one time the coolness of a van decreased as you got older. You then had the comforts of your own room.

One has to be careful buying an old original custom van. The shag carpeting isn't crusty because of dirty shoes.

 

We were a muscle car family. 70 big block chevelle super sports. We were a farm family. There wasn't too much cool custom anything in the little town I grew up in.

Here's where I am on mine. Got the wheels and the stance pretty much set. Full paint coming, maybe lower a bit more...

 

Damn, all these posts are making me want to get another van and start surfing on water again rather then here on the PC.
