Man I had a shity day today, but this thread turned it into a awsem day. Makes me feel like trashing on my cars tonight. I guess car dreams are what keeps us going, and of coarse family and friends.

I just remembered after posting that I have a couple pictures of my grandpa and his custom from back in the day Me and him sit and b.s. about cars and racing ever time I see him, I love hearing all his old stories! This picture was taken of him by the Zanesville, Oh newspaper for some kind of story. Hope you all enjoy, ill see if I can dig up some more pictures. I know my Dad has boxes and boxes of old slides of drag racing and all kinds of cars from back in the day that my Grandpa took. He was stationed as a tank commander out west and I know a lot of the slides are from out there. -Justin
A lot of TREMENDOUS customs in this thread, both old and new! 50fraud, your coupe is stunning!!! I think this may be my favorite. So unusual... so tasteful. Awesome.
^^ At the time of this picture, the car was converted to open drive and parallel leaves, then lowered with blocks. Traction bars were needed to deal with spring windup. Tire size was 600-16 all around, on wide 5 wheels.

Used some of the tricks on the 36 that Robert Williams did in the poster "Hell with a Hammer Devil with a torch" lways liked the look of the 36 Cabr tho He sells these posters on his web site www.robertwilliamsstudio.com
I'm not feelin this one (the ragtop). I guess much like the 50s and to a greater extent the late 60 and 70s, they're not all works of art. It looks right from a rear 3/4 and I can get my head around the fade away fenders but the grille and front facia work almost looks like he tried too hard, or? I actually think it steals from the rest of the work. Most of the 40s customs really are hittin the mark. I think restraint was 2nd nature to the builders of the time.

Post war, I'd guess. White walls were usually higher quality used tires, so they were safer to run fast on.
Definitely!! It should be a must see when guys are building period customs for the stance. Perfect examples of taildraggers.

There is an awsome picture in the new Rodders Journal of Gil Ayala pushing a belly tank in his '40 Merc. I am guessing not too many guys did that with their customs.
also its bad ass to see just how tall these customs really were back then. this is also one of my favorite photos too.

YES!!!!! That pic in the new journal is just flat out incredible!!!!! I still cant stop looking at that pic. Ayala brothers seemed to have been some cool guys and I think people who were friends with them were very lucky. That picture really is priceless!!!!!!!!!!!
