Show us some panel pait jobs on 60's gassers

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by cafone, Nov 24, 2009.

  1. Over the winter we are painting Dirty Thirty's "Gas Lighter" drag truck. The plan is gloss black with candy over bass boat flake panels. We're looking for photos of paint jobs for inspiration...

    Thanks, Mike

  3. Here's my recent barn find 51 Henry J. Don't know when the paint was done, but its pearl laquer that flakes off with the air gun, I'm guessing late 60s, maybe early 70s. The car was parked in about 72.

    Thanks for starting this, Mike.

We're getting the prep work moving, and I'd LOVE to see some late 60's/early 70's type-stuff...lettering, too...

I like our basic layout, from when we had it done "quickie" style, over the primer, but...the ante is being upped this year, hopefully!

The "drag cars in motion" thread is helpful, too...but at a million pages, its tough to pick through for the proper period/style.

    Thanks!

I love panel style paint jobs, especially on gassers.

Kev...that green car was WAY nice...I've never seen the "Guggy's" car before, but its really nice, too...it's tasteful, while still being sorta outrageous, too, if that's possible???
It's still coherent, but sneaking up on insane, ya know??? Not overly psychedelic
I REALLY want it to blaze in the sun, but, still have some painterly restraint!
That is REALLY ashame to hear about the Green coupe...:(
The Tiexeira car has always been a fave...

Oh my God! I can't believe you have the door off that car. I've always wanted to find out more about that car. Can you please scan that photo of it on your wall? I'd love to hear anything else you know about it or any other pics you might be able to share.

    Thanks

  16. It was a local car, a friend was coming home one night from racing at Lions and bumped into the guys who had raced the Willys at Irwindale and crashed it. It got airborn at the top end and destoyed itself as you can see by the pics taken by my friend that night. It must have been it's second outing as another pic shows it at Lions. The door I have (bought from another friend about 20 years ago) must have flown off early as it's in good shape. I've been told it's a Bill Carter paint job.

    Kevin:

Thanks so much for posting those pics. What a shame the car was totaled. That car was so beautiful. What's cool is some of the pics are dated Dec 70. I knew the car had to be at least 68 or 69, just from the styling, but I wasn't sure exactly when it ran. I always wondered if they ever re-built or re-grouped, but I don't think I've ever seen another gasser with their names on it. At least nothing dated after 70. Thank you very much again.

    Very sad shots...
    Man, all that work...
but, I suppose that's racing, sometimes.

Thanks again, actually weird, because that was one of the cars I was really looking for...one that just stuck in my head, you know?
We are going to play with greens, and lace/candies, too, I think...over the black, and I just kept on picturing this car, from memory, in my head...

I like the shot of it on the trailer with the guys and the trailer has wheels that match the front of the car!

that willys sure looks like Dennis the Menace to me. I spoke to the owner last March at a Lake Havasu car show--he's in the background of this shot with his hands together. It's a street rod now, but I could hear the drag car screaming to get out from across the field. He told me he had no plans to take it to a drag strip.

The Dennis the Menace car is definitely the Ron Reiger car. I believe Reiger sold the car and it was run by Grasso and Mills out of Omaha, NE for a number of years. Then in the late 80's and early 90's it was owned by Jay Souza out of California. He ran it in the nostalgia drags with guys like Jack Coonrod, Wayne Harry, Jr Thompson, etc... I think he eventually ran some 7.90's with the car. I guess after Souza, Dennis Johnston got the car, and turned it into a street car. He runs a blown BBC with mechanical injection set up by Jr Thompson. Supposedly it runs OK. It's amazing the major elements of the original paint job have remained on the car since the late 60's.
