The 31 PU I got came with a rearend that I can not identify. its a 5x5.5 pattern matching the front 40 ford drums.. At first I thought Olds, but those I believe are 5x5. some folks have said early 8 3/4 (but some say those would have a pinion snubber..)
The front shot of it looks alot like a 55-6 Ford rear end, could be Merc or Lincoln.. maybe a little earlier. then re-drilled axles for the 5.5 pattern.
pre 57' ford truck would be dana. axles might be re-drilled. pull brake drum and post pic of rear brakes, post wheel cyl. casting #'s
Name your rear? I'll call it "Super Happy Fun Land"...do you charge admission, or can I just go on a ride?
It's a very nice looking rear end, whatever it is --- or at least it would be if it didn't have that bracket bubblegum welded on the top of it. I also wonder what the heck it is, cause I know where there's one like it at a wrecking yard.
Boones - Looks like a 9" Ford rear end about 1957 without the two dimples on it. Station wagon measured out a 57" Backing plate to backing plate if longer a regular passing car. CRUISER
I'd call your rear the Turd Cutter..... oh wait... Looks like 50's ford... I've got one from a '55 or so ford that looks the same... I think... It's to dark out..
I have one outta 61 galaxie that had the hipo 390 innit. They look pretty much the same. Reeeeaaaaly should not have parted that one out.
That looks like the right alpha-numeric pattern for a Ford part number, but I can't make it into anything. Um, planning on doing anything with those ladder bars? I believe that you are in danger.
gimpy I am planning to redo the whole rear set up (and some frame work), just trying to figure out if I should use this rear or not I like that it is 5x5.5 so I can run early wires or 40 ford rims etc.. .. I tried running those numbes on Google with no luck I have an 8" as an alternative but its 5x4.5 (and I hate having mis matched front to rear patterns). The current set up was powering a flattie, I am going to be running a mild sbc.. I am going with ladder bars and quarter elipticals I think... is there any foriegn PU rears that had a 5x5.5 rear
Excellent. I am never wanting to be critical of anyone else, or their ride, but I do worry. I don't want any of you guys dyin' on me. I NEED you knowledge and wisdom. If there is enough meat in the 8" axle flanges, you can get them re-drilled to 5 on 5-1/2". You'll have to pull a drum and measure the size of the flange. In any case, I would recommend the 8" over an "unknown or odd-ball" rear end (or a *gasp* Japanese or Korean one). That does look somewhat Toyota or Suzuki, but it does not match any that I personally know of. Toyota would not have been 5 on 5-1/2" either. I'd pull a drum and look for a re-drill on that one. Daihatsu, Kia, Mistsubisi, and Suzuki have all used 5 in 5-1/2" in recent history. Suzuki Sammuri's had a removable 3rd member too, and that bolt pattern, and were about that wide. None that I remember had a round face like that. Oh, and I now found this: Its a Olds, and the backing plates look really close, but the center is way different.
Dude...I was thinking about your rear end today... I was in the parking lot of my local quickiemart and saw an 80's ish Toyota truck. The rear end looked exactly like yours...The only diffrence was the one I saw had a drain plug on the bottom. Does yours??? PS. The Yoda had 5 on 5.5 also. Had those ugly ass Ford pick up rims on it... But..I have been wrong before.. See ya, -Abone.
Okay, Heres another link, this is a toyota land cruiser 9.5 inch ring. http://www.ringpinion.com/DiffDetails.aspx?DiffID=60&PartsLink=PartCats.aspx%3fSearchMode%3dDiff%26TypeID%3d7%26DiffID%3d60
did another review (can't pull the rims right now due how it is stored) The letters on the center section look like WAD4023A There are two drain holes on the rear, one on the pumkin and the other (alittle smaller) on the housing at the bottom (like FlamedAbone mentioned). there are 10 bolts holding the pumpkin in. Also the rear smooth section measure about 8.5" wide I am now leaning towards a Toyota land cruiser rear as it has similar looks to what dalesnyder posted (anyone own a land cruiser...
i'm going with a samurai with the welds smoothed and different yoke. ok i think i'm wrong, samurai has 8 bolts i think (pattern looks different).
