My father volunteers at a local thrift store and comes across some car goodies every now and then .He buys them super cheap and drops them off at my house to sell if I can .One time he had two snap-on inch pound torque wrenches in their cases he paid $5 for ( score of the century). Last time he had some fog lights ,driving lights and a pair of chromed plastic mirrors .Not really worth much but, this week a box of hood ornaments shows up on my door step and I need help identifying this one .I'm thinking oldsmobile but not sure ,can you help?

Is it an accessory one? There are other 47-48 fleetline hood side emblems in the box as well as a standard hood ornament so I guess it would figure...
Thanks guys...oh and what would one of these be worth ? It's in driver condition and has a small split on the bottom...PAUL

It is an accessory one. In driver usable shape, would probably go for $50-$100 depending on how much pitting and how bad the crack is. That's a common place for them to crack. A real nice clean one would go for more, the lowrider bomb community loves these.

This is the best pic of the hood ornament I have for my 1948 Chevy Fleetmaster. It is a mid-level trim optioned car, but has the upgraded accesory hood ornament. I think it may be a little different than yours (could be wrong,) perhaps yours is a 1947 only accesory.

Edit: Found a better pic and zoomed in. It is very similar, but different.

To me it looks like this one is the same unit but missing the hoop. Any evidence of a hoop being on this one at one time? I've never seen one like this with the plastic insert but without the halo part, unless someone milled a slot into a standard ornament to put the plastic in.

My '48 Fleetmaster had one with the halo on it from the factory, so I'm pretty sure it's not a '47 only piece.

It looks just like the one on my 47 Chev Fleetmaster.

I can't find any evidence that it ever had the halo. It appears to be as old and original as the rest of the car. It has a type of stepped scale or scallop design near where the halo would be. I have seen other Chevies with this specific ornament, I will try and find a pic of one.

According to this website, my suspicions were correct. These are very different ornaments for 47 and 48 Chevrolets. Both are accesory options. AFAIK, the base ornament was the same for 47 and 48's.

chopo, that is most definetly a stude ornament. They were used on many cars and trucks for multiple years. I have rechromed many over the years and I once used a small section of thick-walled steel pipe to recreate the ring on one.

Thats a 47 only Chevy accessory hood ornament could be order from the dealer with any model . Squablow your 48 might be a late 47 and thats why it came with this ornament.

Kool, how fast the answer cme out of the knowledgeable Chevy guys on the HAMB.

It would be fun to show OTHER early hood ornaments close up and put them to test among the group!

That is a 1947 Deluxe Ornament (GM Accessory) The one without the "bridge/halo" is a 48 Deluxe Ornament (GM Accessory).
