  4. Is this a restoration or a recreation? weed burners look a little long. This must have been right before the funnies used zoomies. That would have helped handling a bit too.

Very beautiful job by the way, pretty car.

There was a gasser in every class and then some that ran out of Jack Merkle's shop. He was and is one of the best Chevy engine builders around.

This photo speaks volumes. This IS what Irwindale was about in the late sixties. The definition of this photo is astounding! This car is the ugliest thing Prudhomme ever got strapped into. But he made the best of it. Originally this car was equipped with a torque converter but, I am pretty sure, by this time it was a conventional clutch setup. The clarity of this shot is amazing! ...and then God shows up with his ultra long red car to show the West Coast boys how the game is played. Thankfully, he was only moderately successful with this rig at 200+ inches in length. This did begin the era of the long cars. This was the nicest piece Garlits had up to this point. He went back to black and utilitarian almost immediately. This was truly a departure from the Garlits philosophy. If you've ever seen his other creations in person, in the day, you would know what I mean. And thanks to ts3X65mph for posting these pics!

    that car is beautiful
man--look at the people 5 and 6 deep along the fence. Those were the days

  18. Most people consider Prudhommes '71 Slingshot ( Hot Wheels ) as his ugliest. Neither this one or his other one bother me terribly. Yes, my understanding too is this car had a torque converter too for a time to try it.
I like seeing old pics because there are no jap cars or minivans in the back ground. Gawd, I hate jap cars and minivans and the darn things are everywere today, like flies.

I agree and disagree. I concur that Irwindale had its own ambiance that it was long over shawdowed by Lions. Irwindale was my home track, having ventured there in 1966. I was what...8? You were so close to the track you could see the drivers eyes through the goggles. You suffered the fumes and fire like the starting line crew. The food (In and Out Burgers, a west coast brand that rivals any burger) was great. The weather was semi-arid which meant there was rarely any dew like Lions. Perhaps a slight hamper to HP, but not traction. They ran everything there in the end, motocross, speedway bikes. Every piece of land was used.

Now here is where we part company. I liked the body tin work of the Torque Master. I didnt care for the red/silver hued paint scheme. Thats why they invented metalflakes and pearls. But yes, it was not the performer Prudhomme wanted as his first car.

Wasnt his 69 Wynns Jammer to have featured a full nose piece and some splashes of red trim and air brush graphics on the cowling?

You are right, and later much more black paint added to this car. This is Swamp Rat X. It is actually 175" in length. And Garlits built another longer Hanna (full) bodied car at 215". The later car was a real sweet looking thing too. The car in this photo is actually the SR-8 stretched.

  26. Skip, it was nice to finally meet you today at Eagle Field. Great job on the tech inspection. We had a ball. One of the coolest drag races I've been to in years. Rocky did good.

Hey, I tip my hat on your selection for the avatar. The patriotic 37 Chevy B/Gasser was a local regular in So-Cal. Tunneled rammed 427 put the car in the very high 9's; quite an acheivement in 1970. Joe Allread was the owner/drivers name I think
