"Wild Bill Shrewsberry üse to do a similar thing with the LA Dart when he would come back up the track after a run. He'd stand through the windscreen blipping the throttle and one night in Mackay, Queensland he came back a bit too fast. This saw him go right past the startline, through the burnout box and into the pits - fortunately he didn't hit anyone but it was a sight to see.

If my sources are right, that's Larry Reyes up. I'm thinkin' the car was brand new, first pass.

If remember right, one of the big magazines, Hot Rod, Car Craft, etc. had a sequence of shot of that wreck. Maybe my mind's playin' tricks on me, I don't know.

It looks like the rear roll bar upright is broken in this photo. May be an illusion but it sure looks like it ends.

The car was real squirly all day and Larry didn't really want to lean on it. If you notice the car didn't have any kind of spoiler and the ass end kited. if you look in photo 2 above the front fender tripped the lights. Larry did walk away from the car and the ambulance left shortly after. My dad was concerned and hauled him off the hospitol. They waited along time and finally said screw it and went back to the track. This was about the time the funny cars started going around 200. Alot of the problems involved the front tires. They could not hold up to the speed and added down force the raked cars produced. Unforttanatly it claimed quite a few lives.

Roland told me that Chrysler assured him the "Charger 500" body would work fine at those speeds, as the flush grille body with revised rear window had been run at test tracks and in the tunnel for NASCAR. That's the reason the car had no additional rear spoiler added. With the front spoiler and the lightweight of the car (about half of a NASCAR) the thing obviously took off like an airplane, the car wasn't rebuilt. A completely new "mini-Charger" was created by Logghe Bros. and it won four races first time out with white shoeshine lettering!

  23. This pic exemplifies how inadequate that chassis/roll cage was to protect the driver. Even his arm is up. This wreck could have easily killed him. Funny car chassis changed radically in the next 2 years to more of a dragster style cage, narrower rails with having the headers outside of the frame which remains to this day. Very glad he survived this awful wreck.
This may also be why drivers with cars this quick are required to make checkout passes first with a new or unfamilair car.
