How cool it would be if one or all of you "masterbeaders" made us a video. I for one would really appreciate seeing some of the tricks in action rather than words. You guys are truly amazing!

Here is a customers car I did some work on a while back. I built the cage, motor plate, steering column and frame connectors. I tried to get him to let me do the tinwork before I installed the shoulder bar but no dice. About 6 months later he came to me for the tinwork. It was a pain crawling over the cage but I think it turned out nice. Not close to some of the work displayed here but I did manage to emboss the Mopar "M" into the door panels and rear deck.

Ric, How do you make the radius on the outside edges of your panels? Do you use a brake or bead roll? If a bead roll, what type of dies do you use? Thanks, Gilly

I use tipping dies in the bead roller. It's a flat die on the bottom and a narrow thin-edged die on top. I tilt the panel up around 20-degrees to give it that beveled edge look, then run around the perimeter about 3/8-inch in from the edge. If it's a straight edge, then you could use a brake, but the bead roller allows you to tip the edge of any panel shape. It really gives a nicely finished look, particularly on a panel that overlap another - step the lower panel and bevel the top panel.

Below is what the tipping dies look like. In this picture, I'm using them to put a curved brake into a piece, so it's obviously tilted up way more than 20-degrees. For the edge bevel, only a very slight tilt is needed.

Thanks for the info Ric. Your work is awesome! Ive been trying to make panels for alittle while, but havent figured out what some of the different dies are for. Do you use alot of different dies when you make the panels or is it mainly step and tipping dies? Thanks again, Gilly

I use the step dies for 90% of what I do. I use the tipping dies for the edges, or for the pleats (with a custom lower die that is a shallow V). I do have a lot of other dies, which are handy when you need them, but which get used very rarely.

Hey, look at that - an action photo of the guy who works alone. Camera must have been on a tripod/timer... :)

Here are a few more pics that'll give you guys an idea of what Ric's bead rolling "workspace" looks like, as well as some panels done at the same time the pics were being taken for a "how to" article in Hot VW's magazine.

Like a number of other people in this thread, Ric is very talented. [IMG] [IMG]

I'm proud to be friends with Ric, as well as the owner of a car that he did a lot of great tinwork on back in his early days.

Awesome, Awesome, and again, AWESOME. Yours is a defined talent. I have tried bead rolling on the interior of my stock cars. (a few straight lines, Painted afterword's to hide the scratches, and alot of wasted material) It ain't easy. But, as I've always told my kids, "perfection ain't as easy as I make it look."

How long dose it take to do the average door panel?
