The column cost 9 dollars. Two lawnmower bearings and a length of steel tubing. The bottom bearing is sandwinched between two parts to create the sleeve that fits over the box (not fished welded and smoothed yet). The top bearing is snug in there but I'll stick a couple tacks on for good measure. I'm gonna make a bell to the back of the steering wheel. I was gonna Z the column over to the gauge cluster with an elaborate u-joint/bendy column setup but I like where the wheel sits and I dont wanna screw with steering stuff so I'm gonna move the gauge cluster to the left and use the old clock mount as the column hole in the dash.

Hey...You know those goofy push through wheel bullets from the 80's with the flat end So a tri bar spinner will bolt to it?

they make really nice transitions from steering wheels to columns. and they are generally about 5 bucks each, So You can afford to buy a sacrificial lamb to start with, and a second one for "perfect."

Ajax has em on the shelf behind the counter.:D

The bell off the end of a torque tube works well too.

Nice progress. Haven't checked in for a while. That dash is a winner.

I like the metal bell shaped covers for commercial fire sprinklers You see installed in ceilings. Old mom and pop hardware stores have the best old stuff for cheap.

I moved the gauge cluster to the left a few inches so it's centered behind the steering wheel. I still have a bunch of finishing/smoothing/crying to do but you get the drift...

  24. Looks sweet!! Makes me think of not using the stock dash...
But I couldn't get it as smooth anyways. So I'd better stick with the stock one

Thanks guys. smoothed it out about as much as I want to. Now just gotta give it a little lead in a couple spots. On to the drag link. I think I'm gonna run it on the inside, I dont seem to have any clearance problems even with the suspension moving..

    Just saw this..

There are no part #'s on the bearings...but the steering column wasn't too complicated. I found a couple bearings that were flanged on the outside and had the right I.D of 3/4" and O.D of 1 3/8". Then I bought about four feet of steel pipe-I.D. of 1 3/8" which is the O.D of the bearings. Cut about two inches off the end and press the bearing in, then add the two inch piece back on the end. You can get it square by clamping angle iron to it and tack it back on now the pipe should have a bearing two inches inside. At this point you could cut a lengthwise slot at the end for a hose clamp or weld tabs on for a bolt. Then slip it on so the two inch extra piece slides over the box. Now get your length right and cut it to legnth and cap it off with the other bearing. Now all you have to do is find a bell for your wheel and bam!.. Ten dollar column.
