Couldn't find Richard Hilt listed in '69, '70, or '71. Could the entries have been mailed too late to get listed in the program? I don't have '68, but I do find him listed in '67 with a '61 Pontiac. No. 847

    Hey Colesy..........

I didn't want to go back thru all this but wondered if the winners from the '63 Nationals had been posted? I don't know, this may be a little too old for this deal but thought I'd try to scan it and po st it for ya. I've Been reading all this since the beginning and it's really cool hearing from people I rooted for and against way back when. Have been in contact with Bob Rice about photos and he thinks there's a fellow that can help with the technology to scan some old slides I got. I'm almost sure I have a few more pictures of that old Dynamite wagon. I loved watching that car.

If it doesn't come out large enough and if need be I can take it to work and enlarge it. I think there's some old pictures in the article or the whole write up if your interested. It's just that these old things smell sooo bad and it's enough to make ya sick. Gotta go get ready for the Rebel Run. I think I got a couple more of thses old smelly things down in the basement.

    Thanks John
I dont remember racing in 1967. Of course with old age and CRS my memory is gone! I did not race in 1969 1970 or 1971. But I do remember
Racing your 1957 ford in 1978-79 at Muncie.

It was from an old moldy Hot Rod magazine. It had about 4 or 5 pages of coverage. I think I got a couple of more years around here someplace. Here's the Eliminator Winners from Indy '63. I'll try to figure out how to scan the whole thing large enough so you can read it. I'll have to do it next week.........too much going on right now. Glad you liked it and that I could contribute a little more. I think I have a few more from the mid 60's but not sure.

If those results are correct, Strickler's car must have been a bit of a slug off the line, but had a hell of a top end charge! Kinda looks like the goofy numbers when a Jr. Stocker was trying for a MPH record.

Must be "GRUMPY POWER"....LOL. No, it was a misprint on the MPH. I have seen other reports from INDY of that year and they say 118 to 120 MPH.:D

This is a great website! Full of fond memories, great photos and interesting comments.
I plan to look through my dad’s negatives for photos he took of my car at the 1971 Nationals.

    Dick:

I'm amazed you know who I am. I guess when you run the same eliminator for years you learn names, faces, and cars without a formal introduction. I remember your '59 Chev, and didn't you also have a '58 Biscayne with a FI 283? By the way, I'm still racing that same '57, still with the factory blown 312. No stock classes anymore in this area, so I race it as a bracket car.

    A Story
I am the CHEATER that beat Bruce Morgan in B/S at the 1961 Nationals
since no one but B M was suppose to win the pictures at the time showed
2 57 Chevy FI cats. But My car was not the one in the pictures. It was
    a 1959 Chevy Bel Air 2 dr 320HP 348 4 speed light tan in color #847
It was running Isky steel valve retainers it did not go faster or slower
with them! To the real story I got to run Group 2 stk.E that same
day. The final two cars was George Chatlin D/S 1957 Ford Fliptop and
me B/S I put a car length between us on the start heard him coming up
fast on me he put it in second pulled up almost even looked over smiled
and waved at me Put in high went on to beat me 1-2 car lengths.
So I know all about 300HP 312in Super charged Fords. Plus the fastest
Two cars in B/S that day was B Morgan that a most people dont know as
a stocker driver Fred Hurst [B Gas Supercharged 40 Willys] in A red 59
Pontiac Cat 345 HP. I beat him on a hole shot 1st round.

Thanks for letting tell my story

  20. Guys, just picked these up. This is the original pair of chromed Stahl headers from Fred Anderson's "Good-In-Tension" L/S '57 Chevy.

    Ah ... Those 1957 300/312 blown Fords sure were fearsome ... here's a very-early cut 'n paste post of mine ...

"By the way ... RE: Supercharged '57 Fords

    I sure do 'remember them'!

I went to work at a Ford dealership in downtown Baltimore pretty-soon after graduating from High School. Like most, I had to do a brief 'stint' 'pre-delivering' new cars before going 'on the line.'

Well, a few weeks or so into the job (summer '57), 'lucky me' was assigned a Supercharged, 300 HP, 1957 'Fairlane 500' 2-DR H/T to *'pre-deliver' ... *back then, there were actually a few things to 'do,' other than install the hub caps.

It was a 3-speed (on the column) 312 cu In, 300 HP car equipped with a McCulloch/Paxton Supercharger. As I recall, we sold but a few of those blown cars that year. Great car -- lots of torque. And 'buzzzz up' it did ... no 'turbo-lag' issues with those cars!

About a year later, as a line ('50/50') mechanic, I was given a (non-warranty) 'blown motor' repair job. Well, (I'll 'try' to keep this brief) it was one of the 300HP/312 cars that we had sold the previous year. The car was a T-Bird. And, yes, that engine was available in the 'bird,' as an "F Option."

We pushed the car into my bay and I quickly discovered that the 'front' of the crankshaft (with pulleys intact!) had 'wrung off' when the blower impeller seized up at high RPMs. The service writer was aware of that and my work-order read "replace crankshaft, remove blower." Well, it was pretty-much a 'gravy job' and it went well for me.

The next day the owner ... a doctor I recall, approached me at my work station, gave me a (huge at the time!) $5.00 tip and told me he had 'no use' for the box of takeoff parts (sans crank, of course) that I had meticulously boxed-up and placed in his trunk.

He asked if I would 'dispose of it' for him -- and I 'obliged.' Alas, the blower impeller's roller 'balls' had 'galled' to the races, but I kept it all till I gave it to a friend about 10 years later.

It was a great box of stuff ... blower, gauge cluster, alum carb 'bonnet.' pulleys, belts ... etc, etc!
