Check out the size of the checkered in that Northwest photo; it's so big the starter's got a two-handed grip on it!
I was at Whiteman Airpark in Pacoima, Ca in '67 and Heath was still at it then. After qualifying (sideways, "up on the cushion", on a paved track, if you know what I mean), he scatters everybody in the pits by gassin' it hard and doing a perfect 180 into his pit, tires smoking. I think he invented "drifting".

A question came up on one of the other forums about roadsters on dirt. If anyone has pictures it would be someone from this "crew".
    Anybody got any?

Don Browns 'mechanical rabbits' were pretty successful on dirt with Weld, Saldana and Brown himself up.

Of course Browns cars were built to run the shorter tacks, but in 1958 Jimmy Reese drove Bignottis Indy car at the Hoosier hundred and finished a respectable 7th.

The CRA guys weren't shy about running roadsters on the dirt either.

the san fernando valley.I don't remember if
he owned it or was the manager.

Thanks, I figured he might have got in a sales/managment type deal, with a bum wing and all.

  12. Here's some things I got from the late Pike Green, Victoria/Seattle racer from the 1940s/50s, founder of the Golden Wheels Racing Fraternity.

The business card is a photo copy.

The 1947 shot goes along with the story previously posted (or linked at any rate).

The 1979 Golden Wheels banquet line up is (from left to right): Gerry McLees, Len Sutton, Pat Vidan, Jack Turner and Allen Heath.

    DuQuoin 1964:
Arnie Knepper #14 and Norm Hall fight it out.

Upstart Bobby Unser on his way to a 4th place.

After winning the Stock Car race the day before, Joe Leonard #16 took his first ride in a Champ car. Shown here being passed by J.R.

Beautiful car, Gary. Somebody should have told the news team "Novi" is pronounced NO-vi, not NO-vee.

A friend of mine, Steve Bonesteel just restored the Don Thomas car. He has been running it at several vintage events. Interesting how Don mounted the Buick on an angle to get the drive shaft to the left of the car. He lives in Fresno,ca.

  24. Spike this is a brand new car, built with a little imagination and a lot of help from all the guys who post on this site.......but if we can cook up some former race victories for my sprint,I may be able to sneek it into some of the historic races held here in England...only kidding.Johnny Fast...headlights? we dont need no stinking headlights.(our DMV allows daytime use from dawn to dusk)

Glad to see you're building a replica car. If we could only build and drive original '32 roadsters you might get to see one every 5 years or so. Keep it as authentic to the period as you can. post some progress pics.
