Hi all, I know alot of you right now are yelling at your 'puter "IT'S NOT TRADITIONAL!!", but then neather is dropping your ride over an S10 yet still alot do it and even more want to know how to do it. So without entering into the "traditional" arguement on here, I've just decided to pass on some knowledge that another Hamber has passed to me (Thanks captain scarlet, much appreciated!)

Unfortunately I had to reduce the quality of these attachments so that they can be attached, lets see how this goes.....

That was timely. I also have a "lump" (Jag XJS x/SBC) in the garage and was just getting ready to rebuild the rear suspension. The extra info comes in handy!

    Thanks!

There are many who would argue the "It's not traditional" thing with you - I say fuck that - it's a damn site more traditional than fuckin' air bags.:confused:

If you want the best riding, organic looking and highly visual rear end under your ride - go for it and use a Jag - I am - on two of my rides, with the Snow White mounting/crossmember kit - www.snowwhiteltd.com. Pepper Snow and Ron White are very experienced hot rodders and their mounting kit is thoroughly engineered. Great guys to talk to as well. And for a rebuild Curt Hamilton at Hamilton Automotive 15826 Stagg Lane, Van Nuys, CA 91406 is the best - been doing them for over 40 years. 818 787-9695

Great Tech thread Bash'n'Weld and thanks for taking the time and trouble to scan and post it. I have bookmarked this one.

Great choice! I ran Jag IRS for 17 years and 90.000 miles in a model A coupe. No problems.
If you run into any issues just let me know.

  11. Thanks, great set of information.
I don't see it as OT or not traditional,
good choice of rear end, have narrowed them down and used them myself,
Chromed up I can't think of anything that looks better.
    thanks again for posting this

I ran a `63 Jag on both the front and rear of my `29 RPU for 20 years ... and honestly believe it was the best riding, best driving Model A I've ever been in. In fact, it's still on the road in Arizona -- just under new management.

As for what's "traditional" and what's not ... I guess you need to let all those boys in the Early Times, who were building cars that were the envy of the world throughout the `50's, `60's, and `70's that they were insufficiently traditional. I don't know a one of them by name -- but they've been my heroes for 40 years. And they did lots of Jag suspensions.

  14. I also got that info off the good captain.
There is a ton of useful info on jag rears on the net.
Just goes to show the popularity of the unit in a rod.
Good to share the info I reckon.

LOL a 'lump'! Betcha not many would have known what the heck you mean by that if you did not provide the answer. Now, who knows WHY that term is used? :)

1950jax, I hope you will do a thread about yours with lots of pics, I'm sure it will become an instantly popular build!

Oh and plym49, are you gonna make us actually search the net for the answer or will you let us in on the term "lump"?

    Hi Mate
I am in the process of putting a xj6 jag front end under my 52 chev 4 door , this will give me disk brakes and power steering and lower it with out mucking with the geometry,
and it was free! the only thing i have to work out is the new spring rates , putting the jag springs in with a 350 doesn't move the upper a arms of the bump stops . (the original jag motor being heavier and further forward in a jag)

  21. Bash'n'Weld ... good info ... thanks for taking the time to scan in all those pages and posting them here (NOTE: the resolution is just fine if you click each image a third time).

Here's an early '80s photo of the Pepper Snow & Ronnie White (Snow-White Ltd.) Jag chassis for our '32 Roadster:

... and be sure to check-out Pir8Darryl's February 2009 "School me on I.R.S." thread ... lots of good info & pics there too ... just click HERE.

Hell no, was waiting for someone to ask.

Here's what I know: in the UK it is a common slang term to call the motor a 'lump'. That slang took a path downhill and it became a derogatory term for an American V8. As in, 'I pulled out the lump (aka stock engine) and replaced it with a Yankee lump'. In Jag circles the term 'lump' means an American V8 installed in place of the stock Jag motor. In fact nowadays any Jag with a 'murican motor (usually a SBC) is called a 'lump'.

Note to all: the photo above shows E-Type (aka XKE) suspension parts, not the XJ/XJ-S pieces referred to in this thread.

Yeah, it depends what you want.

The Veteran and Vintage car restorers look down on all hot rodders as being Morons driving bastardised pieces of shit.

Traditional Hot Rodding is doing it how it was done back in the good old days after WW2.
    Great stuff too................

Back then, those guys used the very best of whatever radical stuff was available to them, Ardun heads, mechanical fuel injection, hemi engines, supercharging, nitrous oxide. Nothing was too over the top to those guys, they just wanted to go fast and look mean.

These days (arguably) street rodding is still all about going fast with what is available TODAY.

Nothing at all wrong with proper modern suspension design, independent suspension, disc brakes and an efficient powerful light weight high horsepower modern engine.

No excuse these days to build a car that cannot stop, steer and handle well, have exceptional traction and road holding, and also have a good ride with shattering acceleration.

The Jag rear end is super efficient, bloody strong, a brilliant design, looks great, and is fairly easy to adapt to just about anything. Perfect street rod material.

I am sure others will not agree with me, but then this is MY car.

  28. Most important, SAFETY. Make sure to incorporate a 7" x7" x 1/4" plate at the bottom of differential housing to lower swing arms with 4- 5/16 fine thread bolts.Look and see, this mod will save you a lot of problems down the road and even your life.
    Keep CHUG-A-LUGIN.

  29. Correction, you need 8- 5/16 fine thread bolts !
