  1. Thanks! Glad you like it...

  2. It has been a while since I posted any updates. Progress has been slow.......anyway I have started hammering out a new firewall.

The firewall had been crudely cut out so I started by cleaning up the edge

I then clamped a sheet of 3/4 MDF to make my hammerform

I traced the inside edge of the openning to give me the cut line

I made the cut "fat" and sanded it to the finished mark so it would fight tight in the openning

I then used a router to round over the edge of the form to give me a nice rounded edge to the firewall as it attaches to the cowl

prior to hammering the edge over we added some beads for stiffness and looks. I layed out a pattern similar to the original not exact but the flavor amyway

I seem to be missing the photos of rolling the beads and radiusing the edges.........

Here is how it looks mocked up before welding in

  11. I finally got my firewall where I was happy with it. Started welding it in. Hammerformed the radius to get a nice pleasing transition to the cowl and it is nolonger held in place with clamps! Progress progres.....

  13. Progress continues...

I really liked the look of the firewall extended to the bottom of the cowl but found I failed to account for the brake pedel swing. There was also concern of trapped heat when I add the full hood so I notched the bottoms similar to the original.

I made sure the bottom was level

Measured up the distance I wanted the notch and scribed a level line.

    Cut the notches

Used a couple hammerforms to bend an angle with a smooth radius to the edge

The angle matched what I wanted for the toeboards.

Then on to developing the trans tunnel

Not owning a set of slip rollers I improvised by making a radius bender from the scrap pile

It is a piece of 6" heavy wall pipe I welded a 2"square tube to the bottom to mount in a vice or my stand. I then added a spacer and clamped a length of flat tube to the top. The spacer is just thicker than the stock Iwant to bend.

The next step is to gently bend your piece over the pipe moving it in and out to get the radius needed.

With care you can get nice smooth radiused panels

I need to fine tune it and scribe cut and weld in place.....

  22. Well I am still "SLOWLY" continuing on my Coupe.....

Got the toeboard area fitted and tacked in.

In the process of fitting the pieces I needed to mark a cut line across a radiused piece. To do this and line it up with the edge of the toeboard I used a laser level.

I jigged it up using a magnet base for a dial indicator.

Aligned the laser line to to the toe board break

I then marked the line to scribe the cut

Cut fit and ended up as shown above.

I had been loooking for a diffferent dash to use and came across a really good deal on a '46 Chevy truck dash. Trial fit it is going to work out good I think!

Still some fitting to do but you get the idea...

Tim, thanks so much for taking the extra time to document HOW you did so many aspects of your build. To a first time hot rod builder like myself, it's exceptionally helpful!

I have a question about the way you modified the curvature of your rails to match the body. Did you also pinch the rails near the cowl?

Thanks and I'm looking forward to more ideas I can copy.....er, I mean updates! ;)

  30. Tommy,
The easy answer is yes. The longer answer is that I started out with bare rails. So when I set up the spacing I placed them with the body overhang I wanted. If you were to measure it compared to a "stock" deuce frame I am sure it would be narrower at the cowl as well as every other point. I also narrowed the front cross member somewhat although I cannot give you a figure. It was more by eye to minimize the excess past the grill shell.

Glad it has been of help...

    Tim
