I found an '59 edsel ranger 2 door on craigslist, and im wondering how these cars fair as far reliablity. I know edsel parts are scarce and everything so it might be a while to scrounge up parts. Do these make good customs? What do you guys think, should i snatch her up??

Here's my old '59. I loved it. It now belongs to Frankie here on the HAMB. As far as parts go, all the mechanical is '59 Galaxie, so it's not too bad finding parts. Trim parts are a bit scarce, but they are out there. I'd go for it. Dare to be different.

    P.S.
I'm not really up on my Edsel lore (advanced age = CRS) but if I remember correctly they did offer a 6 cylinder, but most I've seen had good-sized V8s.

I recall a dude in my youth had a '52 Ford with some kinda humongous Edsel engine (I wanna say 430 cu. in, or somethin' like that?) Anyway, it propelled the Ford in a fairly sprightly manner!

Good luck .... hope you didn't miss the deal pissin' around gettin' HAMB opinions!

The big Edsel engine was the 410. Good luck finding parts for that beast! LOL

    no brainer!

  16. It's just a '59 Ford in drag with a Jimmy Durante nose stuck on it, parts shouldn't be that bad except the trim. Plenty of people drove them 100K or so back in the day, if you can handle basic stuff it should be more than reliable enough - I'd carry a few spare bits just in case, when I drove a similar era GM car it went through generator brushes like mad.

    And yes, a $500 '59 two-door anything is pretty much a no-brainer if the body's decent.

    X2!!!

Parts aren't as hard to find as you might think, at least not for 59's. . .you just have to know where to look. . .AND there is the benefit of the Edsel HAMBer's Group here. . .we trade info on how to track down parts. . .

As far as reliability. . .My Grrl has over 100,000 on the orginal engine (292Y), and other than some "sprucing" up of the engine and exhaust (which I'm in the middle of right now), she's been allll over Texas with only minor issues. . .

Do Edsels make nice mild customs? I'd have to say HELL YES. . .then again. . .I'm a bit biased ;):D

    My Grrl, now. . .

  23. I would've jumped all over that one, and THEN got on the HAMB and said "Look at the really fuckin' cool deal I latched onto!" and bragged about the $500 spent, too!

You DID get it anyway, right? Rather than worry about what WE thought about it?

  27. Edsels were highly under rated. They were good cars and highway cruisers. A 2-dr, hell yes, go for it.

I know 500 is 500, but damn man, 500 barely buys me a grocery trip...that car was sold 10 minutes after the ad came out. Snoozer.
