Chopped50Ford the wheel pictures that Elrod attached are better than the ones I have. I don't know if you're trying to stick close to original or not, but the lists I have all show Tacoma Creme as the wheel color with Washington Blue.

Is it the same as a 100E-type engine?
I haven't been able to find much info on Essex cars, I'm assuming they were imported from England to Australia.
Any links or info on British sidevalve 4's?

I hope to build a flathead 4 powered modifide so far I have a 25 chev chasiss, 27 chev cowl and ford "I" beam.

When I was in high school in the late "40"'s and early 50"'s there was a story about an Essex down by the beach that was one of the fastest cars in So Ca. could have been a myth but was also told it was used as an ambulance during or rather after the Long Beach earthquake in 1932. Maybe some one else knows more about this. It was a common "story" at that time. Could have been BS but it impressed me.

Thanks for the flywheel info Daryl.

I'd better make sure I get the right one in the first place.

I'm thinking if a saginaw 3 speed with a Mac's adapter behind a Model A mill, and later on converting it to an OHV using a Chev head and a T5.

I have a Chev chassis to run under the coupe - no fabrication required for the rear.kickup.

Chris,

Tell me what your using and if it meets your expectations once it's on. I too will cork the open header soon and turn to a glass pack I have. I still want a throaty sound and figured the glass pack would provide a tamed but deep tone.

On the Model A Ford Chapters and their snobery- they should just be glad our cars are not being crushed, rotting away in a field somewhere or of the "I'm gonna fix'er up some day" type.

I don't see any Model A's in the banger meet(90% anyway) that can't be taken back to bone stock if a restorer wants to put the cash on the barrelhead and "save" them.

Instant single plate clutch & lightened flywheel. A pre-1960, all aluminium, floor-shift, 4-speed with Overdrive would be nice in a street driven Banger.
(A bit expensive & hard to find in Oz, but I’ve heard there’s heaps of them lying behind every old shed in the US & UK)
I believe the Chrysler/Plymouth 4cyls flanges are similar too. (perhaps Rich Fox can confirm this)

The disadvantage of the multi disk clutch is that oil from the rear main would get into the clutch assembly and mix with dust from the clutch disks and cause the disks to hang up in the flywheel. The clutch would also chatter because of problems with the disks releasing.

That's why Ford changed early (about Nov 1928) to the single disk clutch. It can get rather expensive to rebuild a multi disk clutch. More than just the clutch is involved. It will also take some doing to change it out because of major differences.

To change from a multi disk clutch to a single disk clutch you must replace the flywheel, flywheel housing, pressure plate and clutch disk, and transmission.

The early transmission for the multi disk clutch had a different front main driver gear and shaft and no throw-out bearing.
The early transmission case was not tapped for the bolts that hold the front bearing cover, which is a snout (housing) for the throw out bearing slider (hub) to ride on. If you get a later transmission, make sure it has the front retainer which is the slider snout for the throw-out bearing, and the throw-out bearing hub. -- Les Andrews, Technical Director

Vintage sprints & midgets used cut down multi disk clutches to provide a powerful, low inertia, clutch and more foot room in narrow, single seat, cockpits. Generally, the friction linings were removed from the plates and additional steel plates are installed to maintain the clutch pack thickness. Any oil mist from the rear main didn't have a negative effect on the steel plates and is reported to have given a smoother engagement, like an oil bath motorcycle clutch.

thanks for this post it has answered many of the questions of why the early guys prefered the muiti plate for speed work my only question now is would the ar motor be a better motor to use for an overhead with a c crankshaft or counter balanced crankshaft[ar had morebearings on the camshaft]

My dual 18" glass packs still have a higher pitch than I would like. Really "Raps" when you wind it up. This is with 2" dia. tubing from headers back. But the price was right. Bought from Summit Racing 2" slip fit.

I got the mufflers on last night- what a difference!!! It idels pretty smooth and quite, but the more the RPMs go up the loader it gets. Still has a throughty, raspy sound. Sounds bitchin, but not too load. I had 14" glasspacks installed. Nothing special, just what mu exhaust guy had in stock. I love the new sound, and now with a little backpressure, it seems to run a little better

my banger drives me crazy....why isn't it leaking oil? i checked the dipstick 3 times! actually i'm just dreaming of the day i CAN say that.
