Event Coverage My Road Trip to Pete & Jakes Open House

Last Thursday evening I was talking to my good friend Denny Slaymaker and he said he was driving his '34 Coupe down to Pete & Jakes Open House the next day and that I NEEDED TO GO TOO!!! I couldn't argue with that so I got the wife's blessing and figured it all depended on me not having to work on Friday and Saturday so the next morning I called my boss to see if he could let me take off. He said "no problem", I said YEESSS!! So then I had one other small problem, my roadster didn't have current stickers on it so I headed down to the Courthouse to get in line before they opened at 8 AM. No problem, got back home and pulled the roadster out, checked the oil, aired up the tires, loaded my tools and hit the road. I had to go 130 miles over to Spencer, IA to meet up with Denny by 11 AM. I made it with a few minutes to spare. We then headed down US 71 all the way to Peculiar, MO. Nothings better that two old hot rods clicking off the miles on two lane on a nice spring day, passing most everyone and wearing a big smile. Sure beats working too! We hit Kansas City at rush hour but it wasn't too bad and rolled into Pete & Jakes at 7 PM. The Slover's had a great bar-b-que buffet set up and Jason told us to get back there and eat up. They sure know how to make you feel at home because I had been thinking of food since we passed a rib joint in St. Joe! We hung out and hooked up with friends, Randy and Pam Gribble from Watertown, SD, and Ed Belkengrin from Minneapolis. A trip to the car wash to clean off the bugs and road grime (we hit a little rain), and then the motel for some chair time in the parking lot. Saturday was cool but all sun at Pete & Jakes with a nice turnout with some really nice rides. A great day that ended with Randy and Pam receiving the Super Bell Axle Award for their '34 roadster and Denny getting the Pete & Jakes Award which were both a cool little dropped axle. We hadn't entered the car show so they were both really surprised to be given awards. Jason said he had always remembered Denny's blown '34 Coupe from when he was a little kid so that tells you how long the car has been on the road (25 years!!). We had a great time and got back on the road with a stop to see Curt Cunningham at his shop, Carriage Works. I am always blown away with what Curt is building, he never stops coming up with something new and unique. This time he had a minature quarter midget under construction, old gas station mechanic's cabinets and Mopar signs completed, and the neatest art deco lounge chair under construction. And thats in addition to his unbelievable collection of signs, petrolina, muscle cars, NASCAR bodies and more. Thanks Curt for taking the time to show it to us! Denny and I got back on the road again and headed north. We pulled over in St. Joe because Denny's coupe hadn't been running right and was getting worse. He had replaced both power valves the night before to no avail. It wouldn't take throttle and would kill pulling away from a stop light. We pulled the hood and Denny put in a spare magneto he carries (and a timing light too!) but that didn't do it either. Then he disconnected one carb at time with some improvement running on just the rear carb. We then split up with me taking I-29 and Denny taking US 71 home to Spencer. We both got back just after midnight (I had a slight delay after getting pulled over 20 miles from Sioux Falls for a tail light out but no ticket). The next day Denny discovered his problem, the brake booster diaphram was ripped causing a huge vacuum leak.

Two days of fun, and about 900 miles on the old Roadster! It doesn't get any better than that. Well maybe it does! Next weekend is the Annual Lake City Roadsters Reliability Run in the beautiful Black Hills!

Our pit stop in St. Joe where Denny changed out the mag for a fresh one, and unhooked the carb linkage to try and isolate the problem. It turned out to have a ruptured power brake booster diaphram.

WOW Awesome pics! Of all the killer cars there I think Denny's is my favorite. What impressed me the most is the automobilia, no wonder I can't find any signs any more! The wall of Oilzum stuff is incredible, I'd kill for just one sign and they've got a whole freking wall of 'em! I love a road trip!

There's NO excuse for stopping at P&J's when going thru the KC area.... just hit US71 south and exit at the Peculiar exit ... right across the street from the Flyng J truckstop.

Anyone know what the wheels are on this 40?

 

Those were some sweet rides............ and having Norm Grabowski there was icing on the cake.....he is a hoot!! and never a dull moment with him.

Way cool thread. I was buzzin' across the south end of Springfield in the '40 Monday afternoon, and saw Norm heading west on Hwy 60. Was cool.

 

Thanks for posting the pictures. I've been to both Pete & Jakes and to Curt's places and they are both fantastic. Makes me want to go back and look again. Thanks again.

I love the mechanics cabinet at Curt's, someday I'll have one of those. He has lots of neat stuff for sure!

 

He couldn't because he has the motor out of it. It turned out the block had a few cracks in it and it needed a sleeve or two so its on the motor stand waiting to go back in. He says its now a 296 and sounds pretty good.
