  1. Ok, hear me out on this. I want to know if I'm nuts or not. And yes I know it's my car and my decision.
Anyway, I have a rebuilt 305 and a rebuilt(so I was told) TH350 in my 50 Chevy. I have not run it yet. I still need to come up with some parts, Alternator, ignition, rebuild the carb ect. Well my good friend just bought a 68 Belair with a 250 six and a powerglide. Well he's pulling the whole shooting match and he has offered it to me for FREE. The car only has 68k on it and it runs like a top. He's putting in a 454.
I'm thinking of pulling the 305 and dropping the 6 in. I think the 6 is more unique and they make some cool hopup parts for them, daul carbs, split exhaust, finned side covers and valve covers ect. The six is comple top to bottom and needs nothing. Langdons sells bolt in motor mounts for 250's so it would be pretty straight forward.
Have I lost my mind or does this make sense? Thanks as always, Todd

Makes perfect sense to me. I would be all over that free 6 and glide and you are right about the cool parts you can put on the six. Go for it and be unique!

I'm not a big fan of six cylinders, though it seems over the years I've owned a few cars with them. the slowest car I ever owned was a 66 nova with a 6 and powerglide. I say if you like the 6, use the T350 from your 305 rather than the PG.

I have a 305 for my 49, should be fairly economical, and if i ever decide to upgrade and build a nice strong 350 or 383 stroker I'm already set up.

that's how I got it figured anyways.

Shit, it's not like you are going to weld the engine to the frame right?

I say go for it, if you don't like it change it later.

Many years ago I put a BB chevy in my 39,,, changed that.... :D

Just as you could upgrade the 305 to a 350 you could at some future date go for a 292 where the 250 sat. I say do it.

I say go for it. Hell, you can't go wrong with free and like you said, they do make some cool hop up parts for them.

Since you already have a good Turbo 350 trans use it with the 250 six and the Powerglides' flexplate and starter(been there, done that) the Powerglides are selling for good bucks lately so should help the budget.

Yeah, the TH350 will make the most out of the 6's power. Bolt the PG to the 305 and sell the combo to help pay for a nice intake and valve cover.

Free six?? MMMmmmmm six.. what oh uh yeah I'd stab that six in there. Inliners are cool.

  27. Just for my own education, Why should I ditch the PG for the TH350? I know the PG is a 2 speed compered to the 3 spd TH350 but isn't the final drive ratio the same? Thanks, Todd

itll help the tractor motor move that thing due to better gear ratios in the lower gears :)

Go for a late model multispeed lock up type trans. Sure you need an ECU to control it but thye nice flat torque curve of a six would make a supernice driving car. And give Sissels a call about doing the head for you (* not like the dude in your avatar though...where Did you get my pic BTW?) .
I didnt realize Kay Sissel was still going. I had a Sissel head over 30 years ago on a 235. The power increase was amazing!.

I got the same deal a little while ago too. One of the guys from the car club ditched the fresh rebuilt 250 and Aluminum Air cooled powerglide..... I already dropped it in my 50 chevy, and it does very nicely... its not gonna win any races but it cruises very smoothly. Used langdons motor mounts too. They are really nice but need a little coaxing and test fitting to get it right. Let me know if you need any pictures or anything.... I also wanted to thank you for the pictures of the master cylinder conversion you put up a while ago. I recently finished my dual resivoir master, and I did it exactly the way you did, so thanks man.
