Los Gatos, CA - Fifty nine year old San Francisco Bay Area native Dave Schaub is going on the trip of a lifetime this fall. The Los Gatos, California resident and founder of Schaub's Meat, Fish and Poultry located in Palo Alto, California will set out Tuesday, September 8th to drive his 1932 Ford hot rod roadster through all 49 continental United States in just nine days. That's 9,800 miles in just 216 hours. Schaub hopes to raise as much as $50,000 to $100,000 for the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford.

An experienced adventurist with many years of cross country hot rod journeys under his belt, Schaub is supremely confident he can go the distance. "I'm doing this because people said it couldn't be done and I've always wanted to find a cool way to help some kids in need," he said. "It's going to be hard. It will be the ultimate reliability run to test the mettle of me and my machine. I got excited about the whole concept a few years ago through the Iron Butt Association - a group of motorcyclists who bill themselves as the 'World's Toughest Motorcycle Riders'. They've organized several long distance rides around the country for motorcycles, but through all of my research I haven't been able to find anyone who has done all 49 states in a car in nine days. When I get road weary, I will turn my thoughts to the kids. I'm hopeful that will give me the added boost to pull it off."

Sponsors will also have an opportunity to get involved. Schaub's black '32 Ford roadster, built in South San Francisco by the Roy Brizio Street Rods shop, will be wrapped in a vinyl cover by Yak Graphics from San Jose to carry sponsor logos and signage. Schaub made it clear that he's paying for the gas, food and lodging out of pocket. All private donations he receives will go directly to Ronald McDonald House at Stanford.

His plan is to launch from Needles, California and head southeast. Once he gets to the Deep South to the Florida panhandle, he'll drive up along the eastern seaboard, going through New England at night before heading back west picking off the Northern states along the Canadian border one by one. His biggest day will see him pick off 12 states in one day’s drive time. As he approaches the eastern edge of Washington state, he'll head north through British Columbia before hitting his final destination and 49th state with a stop in Southeast Alaska in the small town of Hyder.

To authenticate his journey, Schaub will keep a time stamped receipt for gasoline and other items in each state he visits. He will use a GPS satellite device known as "SPOT" which will allow Internet users to track his progress in real time on Google Maps through his website.

An official send off party/press conference honoring Schaub's pending feat will be held Friday, August 21st at the Goodguys 22nd West Coast Nationals hot rod show, held at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds.

He's got ones bigger then mine!:D
I give him all the credit in the world for attempting this and wish him the best of luck.

Looks like day 5 of his trip he'll be within 45 minutes of my place. I'll have to meet him there with some cookies as a road trip treat.

Last summer 3 guys in a Scion did the lower 48 States in something like 40 hours. They only stopped for fuel, period. It was pretty cool to follow along with them online, they blogged when they could.

Thanks for the headsup John, it's nice to see you active here on the HAMB.;)

When in Hyder, Alaska, he should get "Hyderized".

I think you're referring to the three guys that did a non-stop except for gas coast-to-coast drive a year or so ago, some college guys with nothing better to do. A coast-to-coast in 40 hours would have to be an average of about 75 MPH. I believe that doing the lower 48 in 40 hours would require assistance from the USAF

Yes, thats the guys I'm talking about. I was mistaken, they did it in just under 107 hours.

  9. Yeah, it would be impossible to do the Lower 48 in 107 hours, IMO. You'd NEED the AF and something with wings on it that actually flies.

They DID do it, I followed along with it online.....they did it in 4 days, 10 hours and 40 something minutes. Alittle over 7,000 miles. Go to the website I linked and check it out. They had three drivers.

    Hey Guys,
Thanks for the comments and good cheer !! And JD thanks for the post. I really excited about this extreme test of me and the car. I'm not new to this kind of driving, just never done more than 3 days in a row yet. But I'm sure when the time gets here I'll be ready and so will the roadster. The car is going to Roy Brizio's shop of a little check-up and some add ons like a bigger tank, driving lights and cruise control. I'll keep you posted as time get closer. If you get a chance, go to the web site. There you'll find more info and a place to donate your penny a mile for the kids. Check it out

    Thanks in advance, Dave

Well, Its off to Roy Brizio Street Rods for a few extras. To make a journey like the 49in9,
I need to stay in the saddle a lot longer than I normally would. So the roadster is getting a BIG GAS TANK..... 35 gal. The guys at Brizio's will build a SS tanks and install it in the car. The driving light, cruise control and other comforts will also happen.

That's an awesome road trip plan, and a killer car too. I'd love to see more pics of the car. What motor/trans/rear end gear are you running? Looking cool, driving a beautiful hot rod for charity...how can you beat that?

Yes I plan to sleep..... about 5 to 6 hours a day..... or night ! It all about time management. Quick gas and food stops of 8 min or less, keep moving forward,
take a nap when I need too and have a good route. Oh ........ and have a good car ( mine has 60,000 miles on it) thats broken in. I plan to go though New England at night to beat the traffic and also on a weekend. So wave at me say I go by.

Looks like a great trip in a really nice car. Keep us updated!

I saw a documentary (filmed by the participants) once some years back; Four guys traveling by mini van-they attended a major league baseball game at every major league baseball park (28 at the time IIRC) in as many days!

It took some big time logistical pre-planning when you had to consider having to aquire tickets and to have each team playing at their home park when you made the run through their city (ie, both NY or Chicago teams had to have adjacent home games). IIRC, to make up for the drive time to get through the midwest, they hit 4 games in 3 days (night and day games) over a weekend in the North East area. It was balls to the walls at times. They'd finish watching a game, then pile in the van and drive all night/next day to make their next game hundreds of miles away at their next city.

  21. I don't see how you're gonna average 45 mph.

I don't see how you're gonna average 45 mph and sleep.

    Have you researched sleep deprivation?

Do you have a biosensor vehicle shutoff device?

What's the point of trying to do this in a short time period?

It seems like you're planning to seriously and willingly risking the general (unwilling) public safety.

    Thanks,
    Kurt

Hey Kurt, the point of doing it in a short time is to get people attention.... It is very possible to do and my buddies at the Iron Butt Assoc. do these rides all the time. I've been researching this for over a year and I've done my homework. This is called "Drivin' for the Kids" not getting killed for the kids. I will be in good shape, have been doing long distance driving for years cross country and love it. For pepole who don't get out and drive, this may seem impossible, it isn't !! And people can check it out when I launch in Sept from my web site. Hope that helps answer some ????

I'll be surprised if some of the many eco-whacks infesting Shakeytown don't attempt to stifle such a grossly criminal spewing of that villainous grim reaper of the chemical domain--that root of all planet killing evils--CO2. Well screwm. Let 'em eat ethanol.

Sounds pretty ambitious and like a whole lota fun. Couldn't be doing it for a better cause. Good luck to ya, can't imagine you'd have much trouble in a Brizio built car. Gary

Its all about time management ... I drove from Louisville, KY to Gallop, NM in 18 hours one year. Thats 1,300 miles in one day. At 70 something mph average.
Remember, I'm on the interstates, 35 gal gas tank, 2.55 gears, 24mpg V8, gas stops at 8 min or less, food on the run, music, books on tape, beautiful views, wind in my hair and a smile on my face. I've done my homework on this and it will happen. So if you don't think I can do this, (looks like some don't) just check back at http://www.49in9.com/ on Sept 9th, watch me do it on google maps, then pay up, for the Kids.

Looks like you'll be in Michigan on Sunday Sept 13th. I'll catch up with you then and follow along for a bit. I'm sure you've got some sort of backup planned incase of breakdown BUT program my cell number in your phone as a back up to your backup.:D 734-673-6930 Use it day or night. I've got 400 HAMB guys phone numbers from all over the country on an excel spreadsheet with 150 more to add when I get an extra minute. If you need assistance on the road I should be able to get someone to you quickly.
