New England Dragway in Epping. Got photos?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 2many projects, Apr 21, 2009.

  1. Suuuuuuudayyyyyyy Suuuuuundaaaaaaaay!
Anybody got some vintage photos of New England Dragway when they first opened in the middle 60's or some pictures shot in the boiling 70's?
I was given some pictures of scenes in the pits last year be a good friend who haunted the place in the late 60's.
We're going to attempt to scan them this weekend (Never done that before), and hopefully post them by Sunday night.
A lot of good memories of NED back then.
My wife and I had our first date there.
She even trophied that day in '65 Corsa convertible.
She could really pound that shifter.

Those pics are great. I just love old archive stuff like this, but has anybody else spotted the Saab in the lineup in the first one?

  8. I saw the Saab down the end of the row. There's even a fuc%^&g Volvo parked there too.
    What's with that?
Maybe they had a 406 or maybe a 421 shoved in 'em.
Could be too that it was the seed money-investor person's cars.
Ya know make him an honorary member, take his "loan" money, play the game a little ,and build a great drag strip.

[IMG] This is the first version of 1320 Engineering Special. It ran Sanford from 1960 till 64 then retired. With the opening of NED in Sept. 1966 they resurected the old car and ran it 1967.

[IMG] This is the first effort for "The Hard Guys" team 1967. Jim Mahan , Mike Camberlain and Paul Delaney, bought the old Dick Roberts AA/FD and ran it as a BB/D. They would later team up with Tom O'Connell and built a new A/FD for 1968

Also Note... Bob Steele's "Flintstone Charger" F/X car in the back round.

  16. Great pics Jack! Was that Tom O'Connell's black and white Dodge wagon in the background?Think it was an old Malden Police Dept. car.I saw Tom standing behind the car in one of the pics.A couple others looked familiar but age is stunting my memory cells.Lots of memories there.

I have a VHS tape that Vito Venuti sent me awhile back of a trip to N.E.D.by the MSRA back in the late 60's or early 70's.It was made from some old 8mm films his wife took.If whomever started this thread wants a copy,I will see if Vito has any and if not they can copy mine.

Do you guys remember Kenny and Albi Harwood ,also tied in with 1320 Engineering.
They were next door neighbors when we lived on the Cape in Brewster, Ma.
Kennny had the first '64 GTO I ever saw and before that he had a bitchin' maroon '62 Impala SS convertible 4 speed 327".
    Made for classy push cars!

[IMG] Jack Doyle not only managed New England Dragway, he found time to run this top gas car. The car was mostly driven by Don Roberts. When Don was called away by Uncle Sam, Marty Schwartz and Mark Connelly did some seat time.

John.... Walt kept this car long after retiring from racing. I use to drive by his shop while I was working in that area, and see the car park there.

My dad remembers the car real well.

  26. That must have been after the,"Mouse" and that weird purple Vespa bodied AA/Comp he had.Does Sonny(Mazza)still have his roadster?I know it was in hibernation for many years.

I will have a picture of the Vespa coming right, there was a blue version and the purple. Sonny's roadster was restored by someone local, possilbly from Connecticut. I saw it at the Road Ajents for a couple of years, then I heard it was sold to someone in the midwest.

  29. That must have been between paint jobs.I did some lettering on it when it was purple and I think that was around 1963.Date could be off;my memory was a little chemically impeded back then.:D
