Wide 5 wheels use clips (see the first post in this thread). You're probably right about all the 5+1/2 BC wheels.
I wonder what these are off of. They are 15x7 5 lug 4.5 pattern. some of the gas stations around here have them for $10 bucks a pop.
If they are from the gas station, they came from off the shelf, they look too clean to have come from off the wall, or from holding the hose off the floor.
Wheelkid, if i wanted to turn my pickup 5.5 wide wheels into 4 or 4.5 wide wheels, can i use my pickup centre and put a wide 5 outer together? Assuming there is a rivet holding the centre into the wide 5 for aligning the centre to the outer.
Hard to tell........Do they have threaded holes between the lug holes????? Possibly Mopar, mid to late '80's Diplomats and the like..........May read "Kelsey-Hayes" on them somewhere.
There are more sizes and types of the early (1948 and back) wheels than most realize...there are several early Lincon wheels, some funny early Merc sizes, and there are two similar wider 16's for pre-1948 and post 1948 1/2 ton... I have turned up early Merc and Lincoln listings and will try to list'em all out whenever the early V8 guy gets done with the blasted Merc catalog. All thge part numbers are worthless, of course, but the list might ID the odd finds. All the Merc and Lincoln variants surprised me!
I've got 16" Ford-style inner-knob steelies in 4, 4.5, 5, and 5.5 inch widths. I might even have a 6 inch wide wheel somewhere. It seems that there are a myriad of weird applications for these wheels, and I'd guess NOBODY has ALL the correct application info. Probably a lot of over-the-counter stuff.
Alot of the ford wheels I have found have a small ford script between two of the lug holes and are stamped ford on the inside between the beads. How far apart are the lugs that hold the center cap on. If they are ford wheels Im jealous, cant find any around here. PM me if they are ford and you want to unload them. Brad
Unfortunatly no, the rims have different IDs There is a lot of stuff I missed in this tech, I should go back and update it as best I can. For instance, That 16" wheel with the clips and not a lincoln, It's an aftermarket wheel for 28-35 Fords because it has the two step bolt pattern plane like 28-35 Ford wires do I've never seen a 5.5" or 6" wide 16" wheel, I'd like to see a picture of one or some part #s if you can. Jimmy
I just got a nice set of my Dad's '55 Merc K-H solid center wheels. He rolled the car in '59 end over end and never damaged a wheel. He pulled all 5 wheels and put them up. I'm in the process of reversing 2 as we speak, so I can post pics later. They are pretty damn cool wheels. Steven.
Now you've got me curious. I bought a donor 48 Ford chassis to build my 28A. I am using the axles and wheels among other bits. The wheels are 16" with 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. The rims on these are stepped both back and front. I have another set of similar wheels that are also 16" and I think a bit wider but they have the step on the front and the tapered back on the rim. Are my first ones 48 Ford? Are the second set pick-up of some description? I think that was what was marked on them when I got them at a swap. Pete
Those are '39 Lincoln if they are actually 5-1/2" inside, very rare and expensive if someone knows what they're selling. The five inch wide '40 style wheel, I think, was used on trucks up into the early sixties. I once found a pair in a junk yard for two bucks a piece. But what I passed on, not knowing what I was looking at, was an old International truck with 16" Ford style wheels with a 4-1/2" bolt pattern, perfect for a later Ford rear end.
I think you mis read my post. My wheels are 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern, not 5 1/2" wide. My question came mainly from the difference between my 2 sets. One with the stepped rim at the back, the other with the tapered rim. Pete
I have both 5.5 wide wheels with the step and the taper, both sets came from 53 to 55 f100's.....so I am puzzled also
I just picked up a pair of... well one '49 and one '50 Lincoln wheel that take the same size dog dish cap as the Mercury and also has the "bumps" in the rim for the stock full cover 6" wide Lincoln on the left and 5-1/2" wide Merc on the right
I never really noticed all the differences in the two 15X7 5 on 4.5 lug steel wheels I have. I know one pair has extra little holes between the lugs. That pair does not say ford on the back. That pair has a smaller offset and also has a smaller ring in the middle where dog dis hubcaps would attach. The other pair have a larger offset, have ford stamped in the back and has a larger ring around the lug holes.
Here's a couple more rims to figure out. 15" diameter wide 5 rim: What was it off? 15" x 5.5" w 5 on 5.5" bolt circle. Solid center, no slots, inside bumps for '40 style hub cap, Ford logo and KH stamp: What was it off?
If the stepped vs taper wheels are both the normal early Ford width, I believe the stepped backs are 1941-48 and the tapered are 1940. O1A and 11A prefixes originally,,,the stepped wheel was the service wheel for both types. I think the Ford script indicates Ford made wheels, others are outside suppliers to Ford like KH.
That 15" wide five is a later truck wheel, you should be able to find a date code and part number on the rim. I don't know what that solid wheel is
this is a good post. but i didnt catch what wheels (like pictured) came on what? pictured here 'blue is a 16x4.5 wide wheel with 3.5 back space & a green 16x4.0 wide wheel with 3.25 backspace. i always identify the 4.5 wide wheels (blue) by the full triangles between the lug holes instead of the sawed off looking triangles like the green wheels have. i do have a set of 5 1941 ford wheels that came off of a low mileage '1 owner coupe that im sure came on that car new they are the 4.0 wide style. i would liketo be educated on what wheels came on what & what year.
