    Weird engines:

    1) Scout slant 4 , which is really a half of a 318 Plymouth poly.
    2) Pontiac slant 4
    3) Willys 4 and 6 cylinder F-heads
    4) Merc 2.6 and 2.8L V6's - anybody notice that they are offset Vees?
    5) Fiat 4 cylinder 600 engines, have to remove carb to get to head bolt.
    6) Corvairs
    7) NSU Prinz 2 cylinder 500cc. (remember the car that can drive on 3 wheels)
    8) early Chrysler polys with the wierd valve covers.

Actually the Scout slant 4 was half of an International V8, similar looking rocker arm cover, but much more conventional valve location.

    How about a 322 cube straight 8? A '30s Stutz DV32, DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder.

that scout engine sure looked like a Mopar poly, even used majority of the intake manifold , just blocked off the other side.

I know they were 159cid and that is exactly half of 318. I am going to check on this.

I love the KNEPPER engine as that is my last name. Would love to have it. The Knepper family was a very famous racing family in the St. Louis area and Belleville Il. Arnie Knepper raced in several Indy 500's. Steve Knepper is still building race cars (dirt track midgets) and I think still driving ?? His son, Nick Knepper was entered in this yrs. Chili Bowl Nationals in Tulsa Ok. Please keep us posted on whatever you find on the engine.

  8. Stone,

Chevrolet/Duntov were messing around with OHC/DOHC small block variations that looked VERY similar- don't remember what magazine they were in, but probably a Hotrod yearly publication from back in the early sixties

OK here is one of the most interesting cross- sections of any "valve in block" V8 I've ever seen. Lycoming V8 used in Cords....

    http://www.6066gmcguy.org/TwinSix.htm

the 702 Twin-Six is a single cast block, but it does have 4 valv covers and most
    for its parts ar interchangeble.

to much choping to put one of thos monsters in your car, unles you build the car around it.

but you can go with one of the big block V6s gmc made like the 401 or the monster 478 The 478 has 235 horsepower @ 3200 rpms, and can put out 440 ft. lbs. of torque @ 1400 rpms.
This engine has the stanard round truck type flywheel housing and could be mated up with a
13 speed trans or Allision automatic.

Someone in an earlier post mentioned Corvairs, so here is another one. Fuel injected, HEI and computer control. It's insides escaped onto the road in short order...

Theres an early 50 Buick from northern Montana that runs a straight 8 with 2 Buick GN turbos and electronic fuel injection. The entire car is a work of art but Ive only seen it at car shows here. The motor has been dynoed at over 450 HP. It runs a GM OD automatic in it.

I'm surprised this hasn't made it on here yet. OHC Pontiac 421.
Someone else mentioned the Oakland/Pontiac flathead v-8 . Here's a pic of that one also.

Who knows what evil lurked in International's engine boys. All I know is that they did indeed made a 152.1 cid slant 4 for the scouts, and that it was probably the 304 v8 halved. Damn thing looks like a 318 Mopar poly. POLY WANT A CRACKER???

guess u could add the GEO SPRINT 3 cylinder wonder to the list too.

Hey maybe Chevy could cut a 4.3 V6 in half and make a 2.1 slant 3? De Lorean where are you?

Dave Cox! Say it's not true. I am living just so I can stand at the 4.5 when that thing rolls through at full song. I don't want to hear an oil burner.

As I recall each cam lobe would open both the intake and exhaust valve for a given cylinder. Very unique. Ironic that the predecessor to such an advanced engine was the 'super hurricane' flathead six.
