    Anything but a hemi

  3. A 413 with a pushbutton 727 would be rad. Or, a 472, or 500 Cadillac.

  7. So far fate has sack punched me twice, and I couldn't come up with the money for a low mile complete 371 J-2 Olds rocket. About a year later I missed out on a '56 365 caddy mill. Those are kinda my white whale when it comes to motors for my F-1

Now that'a sweet looking F-100 as well as a sweet looking nailhead. Was it any modification needed to hook it to the original 3-speed?

Philbilly, The truck has had the Nailhead in it since the 60's
I did not do the install, but it was done with a bellhousing adaptor that was available at the time.
I do not know what company made the adaptor, but I'm sure that some of the older members could give us some names of adaptors from that era.
I would like to know too.

I've had a 337" Lincoln Flathead in mine for almost 30 years. Looks like it belongs ('53 Model) and is plenty stout for everything but the dragstip.

  13. 390 in my panel nothing fancy.....just the wrong paint color :D.

I did a 331 hemi w/powerflite (late swapped to a c/i T/F) in mine many years ago. Only issue was the front end was so heavy that braking was really out of whack(even worse than a stock unloaded pickup!). Solved that that by swapping on a complete set of 12 x 2.5" fronts from the New Yorker that donated the engine.

that thing was dead realiable, smooth, not real fast, but OK. Drove the wheels off it for 5 years. Sure wish I had it now!

  15. had a 53' with a 302 gmc/4spd/dana 44 rear. the guy before me that did the swap added the ford off the 223 valve cover onto the gmc valve cover. stock ford paint it sure fooled lots of people.

I found a 472 caddy with a turbo 400 transmission. He says it has low miles and is complete ready to drop in and run. Does anybody think it will be any easy swap?

  21. I'm going to put a 390 FE, or maybe a 428 I have if it doesn't turn out to be junk.

I used to talk to an old guy that came into the shop I worked in that had a 56 Ford truck with a CADDY 390 in it. It got up quick.

I haven't seen him or the truck in years though. Its red and looks stock. His name is Gene, in case any locals have seen him at a cruise in or show..

Lots of good suggestions and examples here. I doubt that there is a single American V8 that HASN'T been used in one of these trucks. Suit yourself; imagination, ingenuity, and financing are the only controlling factors.

I put a 460 in mine, but I wouldn't say it quite "fits" in the standard sense anyway...due to many factors!

Strangely, it ALMOST would fit under the hood, even with the high crank centerline, tunnel ram, and wood spacers, and scoop! The problem is it gets into trouble with the steering box, on a stock setup...and its tight, too, up front, with the stock radiator support, but, I cut that out, and made struts so I could move it forward, and I am now able ( just...) to use a puller fan.

About anything will fit keeping the axle. I know the MII crossmember is a PITA except
    for bellybutton motors.

Did you have to notch the front crossmember to clear the crank pulley? What radiator/fan are you using? Any pics?

Ok. I decided on an engine and I decided to get a y-block. Yep, a Ford in a Ford. Some people have been talking about y-blocks and I found a 292 from a fellow hamber. This should be just what I need. I've been doing some research and several companies makes parts for them. Has anybody had good experiences with their y-blocks.
