    hello:
so here's the deal, i have a windsor 351. i hear you can simply bolt on 390 heads... but then i also hear you need difrent studs. any one done it? any one know?

also kinda random, but should i use a head gasket for a 351 or for the 390???

    thank you.

On a 351 W, you can run Wiidsor style heads, with certain rules and limitations such as compression. Those include 221-255-260-289-302-351W.

Oh and if you modify some, 351 Cleveland heads go on, and basicly turn it into a boss.

Why swap 351 heads? Unless going for some OZ made alloy heads, the two versions of 351 C heads (2V and 4V ) are more than enough for any street engine.

A 351W is a widsor. The 221-255-260-289-302-351W are engines of the widsor family. Heads are interchangable. Depending on your desired compression ratio.
A 302 will allow 351C (385)heads bolted on with the right coolant holes plugged. IF you can locate a intake.
This is known as fake BOSS.
Who ever said that the 390 heads will go on a 351W...needs to smacked and never allowed to touch a engine.
    Damn that's like saying a 348 will bolt on a 283.

I think they meant you could run 390 heads on a 352. A 352 is an FE series like the 332-360-406-410 and 428. I'm a Chevy guy with a Studebaker and even I know that!

    360 is a jacked down 390.

stick with your 351 windsor. there are nice heads out there.

I should comment on this subject...most likely the only one on here that I may know a bit about.......but I won't...would be ranting all frickin day.........some folks should NEVER touch an engine, much less try and mix and match..........or begin to sound like they may know a 6 banger from any common V8..........or any common V8 at all. It's a wasteland out there sometimes..........

but yes, most of the FE stuff interchanges somewhat...sometimes.

In many of the engine build competitions an engine called a "cleavor" has won. (Cleavland/Windsor halfbreed) These are basically small block (302/351 Windsor) Fords with 351 CLEAVLAND (big block) heads on them. Some of the HP and torque numbers these engines produce are truely amazing.

  17. Could it be someone meant 400 heads (a'la mid-late '70s) onto a 351C or 351M?

Reminds me of a movie quote from "Mr. Mom": "What kind of a gun is it? .45, .46, whatever it takes..."

A 351 Cleveland or others is NOT a Big Block...

352/428 is an FE and a big block, but not called that by ford folks

the 385 series engines..429/460 IS a big block.

the 351 Cleveland is a 365 series engine

    the 351/302 is a windsor

it's cornfusing........like trying to get the right water pump for a little 289..

or does it have a 5 bolt bell housing or a 6.......

    M.

"big and small block" is a Chevy term.

Most ford people referr to thier engines as what they actually are.

A popular upgrade to the 302 is to put 351W heads on it. So popular that ARP actualy makes the stepped head bolt kit to fit the 351W head and the smaller holes in the 302 block. A nice set of GT40P heads on a 302 is a smooth combination. That is the only comparison that I can give to what your friend was incorrectly saying about putting other heads on your 351W and using different bolts/studs.

    Just my .02 worth.

Just to add to the confusion, if you install a 428 FE crank into a 427 FE block, you get a 454 cid big block FORD!

Try explaining THAT one to your buddies on cruise night!

  21. Even if you could why would you want to? 390 heads suck almost as bad as 351W heads.

Just to clarify, a 351 Cleveland is a 335 series engine, not 365.

    -351 W uses 1/2" head bolts.

-260-289-302-5.0 uses 7/16" head bolts, so interchanging heads will require special washers or drilling of the heads depending on which way you go.

  23. That makes sense. Now what about this 283 - 348 Chev swap?

  24. "Special Washers=$$$"
Or do what I did... Buy a pack of BBC hardened head bolt washers. Much cheaper than the stepped "must have em" washers, and you have spares.

'77 & later 302 & 351W use the same casting, just the head bolt holes are the only difference.

Most likely. Quite a few people remember having a 351 in an early 60s Ford!

  27. I remember a thread on here a while back about bolting cleveland heads on a windsor motor. I guess there were guys doing it in australia. They called the resulting motor a clevor?!?!

Try searching for something like that.

  28. What?????????????????? I know he is an FNG, but WTF kinda question is that?
