OK, I shouldn't even get involved in this but here goes. I think that the shoebox question needs a little expansion. I know you Chevy guys call the tri 5's a shoebox, but that's because 55 was the first year for a slab sided Chevy. But the term was in use before 55 and it referred to a Ford.
The NSRA set a cut off date for streetrods at pre 49 because that's when Ford dropped the seperate body/fender look, that we all associate with a streetrod or hot rod (it also bugs me when someone calls a post 49 car a street rod). The 49 came out with the slab sides which many guys thought had no character and thus was called a shoebox, as a kind of derogatory term.
I know it's hard to change your ways sometimes, but just because the people in the area you live in use a certain term doesn't mean it's correct. If you want to call a 55 chevy a shoebox, you should say "Chevy shoebox", but Ford was the original shoebox.

A shoebox is a Ford.... anything else needs a name to separate it from the Originator.

 

Here is my 51 in 61. Ok, so it is really dirthawker's, but mine looked exactly like his when my friend's 53 Merc was down and he let me run his flippers. The rest of the time it was small original caps and porta-walls.

Update pics on the bodybag. THe bag project is meant to be a late 50's- early 60's sports car, with a euro influence. The slant back headlights were an inspiration from a porsche speedster, or early 60's racecars. The wrap around grill, look at the valley custom Dunn car or the polynesian. Also note 53 Mercury. The Dunn car was over sectioned for me. I wanted a body in proportion to the roof line. Once that's done the hood peak has too much body to it. So that had to be massaged as well. The car has a forward rake to look fast for a reason. The clear plexy bubble on the hood will showcase the 3 scott topped 97's which resemble weber carbs or hilborn injection. THe interior will be complete with carpet, but subtle influences from 60's ferrari's, incorporated with ford's. Everybody knows ford loved ferrari, and so do I. If I was a kid in that time period I would of dreamed of having a GTO ferrari not a pontiac, or a porsche 550 like james dean you lil basterd... Check out the pics. Let the hate begin.

That's the first old car that I have seen that looks good with slanted headlights. Maybe it's because they don't look too moderm like the over used Mercedes and the like. Very nice job.

Looking for some help.... Not Mine but I sure do love the look.

I'm getting ready to chop my 50 ford and I would very much like to speak with the owner or builder of this car. I dont know if he is a HAMBer but I figured its worth a shot maybe somebody knows the car & can possibly hook me up with the owner. Any Information regarding the top chop could help me out.... Build photos would even be better.

I chopped a 49 a while back (just a body) and I sold it to a fellow HAMBer, Philip we need to see a photo or two if you get a chance. I saw a little one on his cell phone and boy its looking good!!
