Similar to the ute thread, but just Slopers. So please post , pictures, tech information, production numbers etc on any make and model. Be it a rod, resto, project or just a relic, for I am sure that the fellow Hambers would like to see and know more about these slopers. thanks oz40 Apolgies about the quality of the pic, its the only one I have of my sloper the day I picked it up in Harrow, Victoria.
Slopers are a unique Australian bodystyle, produced on several makes of Aussie built U.S. brand cars from 1935-1939. This is effectively a fastback 2 door sedan and the nearest thing in the U.S. at that time was the Chrysler and De Soto Airflow 2 door coupes from 1934-1937. I don't have photos of any slopers but here is a U.S. built 1936 De Soto 2 door coupe to give an idea of the sloper type body style.
39 Chev , Some other literature I found says that they were built up until 41 by Buick , Pontiac , Olds and Vauxhall with numbers built being just above 9000 all of which were assembled by Holden ....
In the late 1960s & early 1970s the Slopers were not really sought after. Everyone wanted a real USA style coupe. I knew of quite a few slopers that were just standing in those days.
Yeah, a friend of mine involved in the resto kind of thing in WA, can get for me a 36 Buick Century version, but dont quote me I think one of only about 25 made,.......... RARE
Very true 34 Gaz, I too was one of them, I couldnt give a rats arse for them, all I wanted was 33/34 fords. I came across a few in my tin hunting days, but I always just walked away. Now you couldnt drag me away from one, they are just so unique and collectible now. oz40
Wow, I'm an instant fan! I saw a pic of one once, but I thought it was a custom. A very nice European twist on "American" iron.
Thanks Harry, that you luv our aussie car also. No European influence here on these old girls, all aussie home grown. The needs, political and social issues in Australia in the early years saw the aussies having to design their own styles. I am sure that others will post further info along these lines. thanks oz40
Body by Holden on a GM Chassis and front sheet metal. Were there other makes too? I've only seen GM slopers. EDIT: I just saw the Chysler in the pic above..
Here's a 39 Ford Sloper. They are so dang bitchin. I got aquainted with fellow that owned this one. It would be so cool to get one over here.
Oh...I thought that 'Slopers' referred to when people building 1950's based Customs cut the old roof off, and install a mid-to-late-60's fastback roof to create a roof that looks chopped, but uses a stock roof so they can use off-the-shelf windshields, backlights, side windows trim etc...I seem to remember someone somewhere built a '50 mercury with a '66 Impala roof?!?!? or not. I had no idea the 'slopers' term had another use;they sure do look neat, thanks for sharing!!
Didn't even have to photoshop it.... I introduce to you the Cutlass Salon and the Cadillac Seville! now just forget there are 2 extra doors there.... By the way...the real slopers are pretty sweet.
That's cool, if I would've seen that car before this thread, I would've thought someone did a goofy chop on the rear section...
It's almost like an optical illusion the first time you see one. Like "what the hell did I just see?"
Another neat thing about slopers was that the top of rear seat folded down to increase cargo space accessible from the rear , so they were actually the precursor of the modern hatchback ....
