What year did that car race?

 

1946-48, with a 9th place best finish, I believe.

Great pictures any history to go with them? and whats up with the 41 Willys? Cool hot rod.

 

The famous (or maybe infamous) Pat Clancy Spl., generally credited with being the first Indy car to use solid disc wheels. The 6 wheel version has Jackie Holmes up in 1949, the #12 is Duane Carter and then Freddie Agabashian. My understanding is that this is all the same car, but really don't know that for sure. If, in fact, it is, it looks to be heavily modified from the 6 to 4 wheel version, including what appears to be the addition of a model A rear spring on the front (?)

Mine as well is missing the dash plate. I am still searching for its history. One guy told me the combination of a space frame, spring front with stacked rear bars as on my car was uncommon. If I run into any four bar info I'll pass it along.

The pic that is labeled A.D. Barnes and Betty was taken at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio. Betty is my grandmother. The other pics I have no imfo on. The pic of the Willys was taking the day I bought it. I am in the process of rebuilding it as a 60-style gasser, there are more pics of the Willys in my profile.

For anyone who might be interested there is a midget for sale on ebay. It appears to be a early 38 to 40 Richter Midget with a Hinderson air cooled motor. The grill is in question as all Richter's I have seen in his book use vertical bars and they are inset behind the cowl. Richter did build midgets with Henderson motors. This could be a great buy at this price. I am in the middle of a project and out of room or I would be interested in this one. Richters are rare, even Roy could not find one when he wanted to restore one of his own midgets.

Here is a car that currently is on Ebay that was listed before and the bidding got up to 6700.00 and he didn&#8217;t sell it. So it is hard to say what the value of these old midgets are.<o></o>

FWIW-Floyd Roberts only AAA win did come at Indy 1938, however it was in the #23 Burd Piston car with a much darker paint scheme. Either this pic was mis-labled or possibly it is Roberts at a non-AAA "outlaw" race. Also the guard rail doesn't look to be Indy. Hard to say for sure really.

If a typical sprint car is around 40" setback to the rear end, what is the typical setback of a Champ car?

 

I believe that photo is actually of Cliff Bergere at IMS in 1938. There was still just a guardrail on long parts of the front straight until after WWII. Bergere is in the #9 Karft Real Rye Special which was a Myron Stevens chassis with a supercharged Miller engine. The year is correct but the photo is mislabled.

The video of the gas powered models was great. I have a 1942 Hilliard streamlinner Dad got in 1942. Don Edmonds has a big collection of them and has built some [from scratch].
On the Pat Clancy 6-wheeler. They did make it a normal champ car and I am pretty sure Jim Davies won with it. A.J. Watson built a copy of it a few years ago. Beatuiful car

This is the Dutch Culp Offy. I bought it in 1967 and raced it both on dirt and pavement until being crippled in a flip at Selinsgrove. I sold it to Paxton and Buster Warke, and they did a great job of restoring it.

 

Rootie, is that the Sam Hanks midget that was stolen? If so, I heard it was recovered after some time, and identified by the man who made the upholstery.

 

I don't know about it being stolen, but it was restored by Chuck Porter, in So. Cal, some years back. Apparently, shortly after restoring the car he died of a heart attack, but not before both Hanks and Richter examined the car and declared it to be "perfect."
