Customs L78's too tall??????

I have L78's on my 54 Lincoln. I think they are too tall and the whitewall width is too wide, 4 1/4", are they? I am thinking of going with the Coker Classics g78's. Are these going to be too small? I will probably go with 3" - 3 1/4" whitewall width. Are there any downs to this tire. I have searched through the threads on here and have not really come up with anything only some that are usefull so that is why I am asking. I am trying to go with what would have been correct for mid-50s customs.

They are 15" rims too..here is a pic of the car...

thanks guys for the comments but what im tryong to say is will the g78s be to small for the car...

 

They look good, If they don't rub, I wouldn't worry about it. remember... taller tires give you lower rpm's at any given speed, which means you go faster, and (usually) get better milage. Ive always though the more tire you can fit in the well, the better the looks.
G78 would probably look good, thats what is on mine, but if they didn't (almost) rub I'd get bigger ones on it.

I put some used G78's on my 51 Merc.They seem to fit well.

 

To actually answer your question - no, I don't think they'd look too small - except maybe to you - you're the one that's been eyeballing your L78s. Rest of us will just think it looks normal - or about as normal as any of us actually get close to.

I've got g-78's. But I think you should check out some firestones with the sweet piecrust on the edges. I think they'd look waaaay better than the coker classics. Especially if you're going for that 50's thing.

 

I don't think the G's would look "too small" but it looks perfect with the L's from where I'm sittin'. The more sidewall the better in my book.

Damn, what a tough call! I really like your car with those tires, too.

If you do end up changing the tires, I really like the piecrust look, too - like mentioned above.

I believe the G78 is equivalent to the old size 7.50-15.

 

The L78-15s are correct for this car and so is the whitewall width. The car is killer....no need to change a thing!

this is the same merc when it was brought to me and it had the L-78 on it. they were to big looking and clearance were an issue unless stuff was changed

The ones on Matts car are Denmans and i can get those locally.
Anybody else have any input??

 

Hard to argue Johnny. Comparing wheels on the Merc helps a ton and the G's do look much better proportionately IMO.

 

For the Correct LOOK your trying to achieve the 6.70x15 Firestone White walls are what your Looking for.

G's & L's are to Balloony for the Mid-Fifties Pass Car bodys & they have a WIDE foot print.

That car would have had a 6.70 or equivilant when New & was Pretty much the standard "Custom" size for the Time.

Tall & Narrow was the theme ... Not Balloony & fat
