Does anyone have any photos from Island Dragway, Great Meadows NJ taken in the early to mid-sixties? My Dad still goes there.

Yo, the 15oz. coupe was B/FA run by the team of Hawkins, Webster and McLeod out of SoCal. It held a spot on the 1320 Altered list for quite a while and was very successful at the local drags, too. It's sad to see it looking so "run down". It was a favorite car of mine, since I was acquainted with the driver, Lyle Webster.
As far as the 15oz. reference, I think this was a bit of fun involving the "Burgie Man" seeing leaning on the "oz". He was an icon for Burgermeister Beer, who offered 15 oz. cans of liquid refreshment and the guys picked up on that to dress up their number.
    Hope this helps.

  9. There are some posted here a few pages back. I have some 8mm conversions that I plan to put on dvd. If and when I do it, I will post it here for anyone that wants copies. I still go there myself. It hasn't really changed at all.

I still go to. We have some home movies of me there when I was about 5. I'm 47 now...and the track still looks the same. Hell I think they're still serving the burgers from 1965 too!

I was there just as it happened running thru the pits to get to the starting line stands. I was on the back side of the stands and heard a kaboom! There were blower fragments landing around me. I thought WTF!! There was some dude that just picked up the hot metal fragment and screamed AAAAHHH. Then I saw the aftermath which NHRA kept on the down low. There were 3 men coming out of the stands bleeding from the head (being helped down). There was a 6 year old kid with a piece of metal sticking out of his arm. Wicked sceen man.

  29. When modified roadsters were an actual NHRA class, this body would have been illegal. Requirements were for a stock width shell which is why they all had wheel tubs. This is still a way cool roadster, but for the young guys who weren't around in the early 60's, they didn't look like this.

Pops started going in the early 60s after he got out of the Air Force. He said one time his friends wrote a class designation on the windows of his straight six, three-on-the-tree '60 Ford as if it was some big block racer. They pulled over on 31 at a drive-in and a bunch of farmer's kids gathered round gawking and wondering, LOL.

He also has stories about drag racing between the drive-ins on Route 22 in Watchung. One time some guys showed up with a rail, blocked off the highway and ran it!

Watchung police had Nash Ramblers and couldn't catch anyone.

My friend's Dad remembers a girl with a hot '58 Chevy with script on the fender and a pair of cherries. It said: "If you can beat me, you can eat me"
